Hello From PAsco County Florida

Hey there, New member from Pasco County Florida (Tampabay area). I have had fresh water tanks forever, going to take the plunge and try a salt water tank.

Probably going to purchase an "Oceanic Bio Cube" unless someone here tells me it would be a very bad decision. I'm a diver with a boat, so I plan on collecting Gulf of Mexico water, substrate, rocks, and critters rather than buying from the store.

I do have some experience "cleaning" salt water tanks - big ones! I volunteer as a diver helping take care of the main salt water tanks and displays at the Florida Aquarium. Always cool to be part of the exhibit and see humans as the fish do. I can also say from experience that I know why fish hate it when you tap the glass

LOL... great intro and Welcome! I also have a 29 Gal Bio Cube. What are you planning on keeping in there? It's not hard to over-stock them... or stock them incorrectly...

Re: Hello From PAsco County Florida

I was thinking 1 nudibranch, 1 sea anemone, 1 small urchin, some rock/coral and maybe 3 or 4 small fish collected off a local wreck, or is that already over stocking a 29 gallon tank ?

BTW, how do you like the Bio cube. I just found out about them yesterday. they seem like a great option for newbies looking to start a first tank.

Re: Hello From PAsco County Florida

Well... here goes. First off... I love my cube. It has been quite the learning experience. I started with it because the idea of the all-in-one sounded great. With a little bad advice and a lack of research on my part... I learned a few things the hard way. Do not put an anemone in there. The lighting is not sufficient and they require really stable water conditions which can be UBER hard to maintain in a small system. In addition... nems really shouldn't be kept in a tank less than 6 months old... some will say a year. As far as the fish... 3 to 4 would probably be OK as long as they are not going to get really big. Urchin is fine, as long as you don't mind it eating all of your coralline algae... and carrying around frags, pieces of rock, snails, and in my case, a floating hydrometer, LOL. I have never had a nudibranch, so I can't offer much there. I have done a few mods on my Cube and know several others who have done things to theirs to make them a little more reef friendly.

Re: Hello From PAsco County Florida

Hey Pasco, I am born and raised Tampa native myself. Good luck with your new addiction!!

I would like to point out something on your plans though. Harvesting in the Gulf is illegal. You will need to check very carefully with the Game and Wildlife because I am sure you know they don't mess around down here!! Also the rock and water that does come out of the water here is not the best IMO. It is very saturated with P04 and unwanted nutrients and pests that can and will destroy your tank.
I am not trying to be a downer I just want to make sure that you do not end up hating this awsome hobby because of these things.

Re: Hello From PAsco County Florida

Daddyjax, thx for the info. I knew about coral picking but i wasn't aware all collecting was illegal. Also wasn't aware the water was so bad. Is that inshore and offshore? I was thinking of getting the water and substrate from about 25 - 30 miles out.
