Hi!

Although I've been keeping african cichlids for years, this is my first endeavor with saltwater. I'm starting up a 90 gallon fish only tank. Have been doing my research on the care of the fish and am now in the process of comparing prices on the equipment. Would appreciate any and all suggestions or advice. Thanks!

Re: Hi!

Hi Tammywammy! Welcome to Reef Sanctuary

A few hints:
  • Get a sump (more water volume plus it is a perfect place to hide all the equipment - heater, skimmer, Auto Top Off, etc)
  • Don't scrimp on a skimmer! Get an Aqua C Remora Pro (hangs on side of tank/sump), or the popular in-sump models of the ASM and Euroreef.
  • Go slow
  • Get a phosban reactor with phosban/rowaphos to absorb phosphates (nusiance algae fuel )
  • Get a ro/di unit to provide pure water for your new tank and to eliminate impurities.

Re: Hi!

Hello Tammy Welcome to Rs... another big thing is stay away from crushed coral as a substrate , it is a nitrate factor in saltwater tanks, use sand instead.

Re: Hi!

Hi all and thanks for the friendly welcome!
Re: sump, skimmer and phosban reactor, I'm comparing prices at different vendors.
I did read quite a bit on this sight and the info is AWESOME!!!!! I have a friend who is a marine biologist who recommended crushed coral. Now, after reading all of the info, I fully plan on getting live sand.
Re: the RO/DI unit, is it really necessary for a FO tank?

Thanks so much!

Re: Hi!

Welcome to RS! Lots of friendly helpful people here to help you out.
Getting a RO/DI system will save you a world of trouble in the long run. It will remove the algae fuel from your water and you will have a lot less algae problems.
