| Tunicate | Hello Hello, I'm new to Reef Sanctuary and to the world of marine aquariums in general. I am thinking about getting an Oceanic Bio Cube 29, and was wondering if anyone had any experience with this system. I would like to try my hand at creating a nano-reef system. I know this system doesn't come with any kind of protein skimmer, but kind of like the idea of getting everything as a package, then just adding a few more things to bring it up to snuff. I have a fairly limited amount of space to work in, and the size and shape of this system would fit nicely and still leave room to get in there for water changes, etc. What are the drawbacks of the Bio Cube? Is there a better compact system? Will I end up beating my head against the wall? I've only ever kept freshwater fish before, but am excited to expand my horizons and appreciate any help or advice you can offer. I'm sure I will be back with many questions as I start to get set-up. |

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: Hello Welcome to RS! Lots of friendly helpful people here so sit down and join us. It is a fun and informative forum. The biggest problem I know of with nanos is keeping the water quality up to snuff. Frequent water changes as well as a good protein skimmer will help with that but you will have to keep a close eye on it. There is a saying I hear often. Dilution is the solution to polution. In other words the smaller the tank the more quickly things can go wrong. With that said, I love the look of the biocubes and they seem to get good reviews as well. I don't have one so I am just repeating what I have read and heard.

| Re: Hello Hello Siri, I agree that smaller tanks have always had the reputation of being harder to keep but..........filtration, lighting and knowledge have improved enought to allow nano tanks to run strong. The smallest tank I have is 30 gallons, but I have several friends that have as small 6 gallon nano's and have great sucess just remember, this is a hobby of you get what you pay for so stay away from the less expensive items like skimmers, filters etc and always use high quality water, treating tap water with a chemical will not work, especially in a nano, you need RO/DI water ALL the time and live rock and sand are the best filtration you can have matched with a high quality skimmer. |

| Acropora ![]() | Re: Hello Hi Siri! Welcome to RS. I have the 29 BioCube and have done a few mods to mine. So far this is the all in one system that I liked the best. I have no complaints. There are a few more coming out in the next few months so we will have to wait and see. The only draw backs to nano systems are that when things go bad they can go bad quickly so you need to stay on top of everything. Also you are very limited in the amount of livestock you can keep so its a good idea to plan out your tank before hand, add livestock in the proper order to avoid potential conflicts and resist the temptation to add just one more fish and push the limits (thats the toughest part for me...Im weak!) Check out these threads and if you have any other questions please feel free to contact me. Skimmer/Refugium mods Lighting Upgrade
