Newbie!

Hello, new to the forum and new to the salt water hobby. Have been working on my 55 gal. set-up for about a year and a half. Currently have 40-50lbs. of LR (maybe more), 20lbs indo-black live sand, 2/40 watts 20,000k coralife, 20watt coralife 50/50, 65 watt coralife 50/50, 3000 Milenium, 2 powerheads, 1 Blue Devel Damsle, 1 Pajama Cardinal, some hitchhiker starfish, Turbo Snail, Blue leg Hermit crabs, and of course a nasty bristle worm that needs to go! Seriously thinking of moving up to a Protein Skimmer but not sure how to start.

Re: Newbie!

to RS! Glad that you joined us. This is Great group of folks here and they are very helpful. Feel free to ask any question or for information on your tank. The only terrible question, is the one that's NOT asked. Ask away. Normally, someone might have a bit of help for you and will be glad to give it. And if you have any pics of your tank, theese folks are going to ask you to post them so that we can see them. We love seeing each others tanks. Here's to you

Hello and welcome to Reef Sanctuary

Skimmers are a very important part of my reefs cleaning mechanics! Make sure you research them before you purchase because they're are some lousy ones out there...

Re: Newbie!

Welcome to RS! Lots of friendly helpful people here.
Absolutely get a skimmer. They work tremendously well and pull lots of organics out of the system. Personally I like my ASM skimmer and just upgraded to a larger model. Do a thread search and see different people's opinion of various brands etc. I have heard many times to buy a skimmer rated for double your water volume since most manufacturers "overrate" their skimmers.
Hope this helps some and yes post some pics when you can. We love pics.

Ken, you can create your own thread. Try creating one in the General Reef Section --> http://www.reefsanctuary.com/forums/...um-discussion/

... and Welcome to Reef Sanctuary!!

Re: Newbie!

Welcome to RS !

Skimmer is very helpful .. I went with a prism backpack skimmer myself ... My bio load isn't very high at the moment , but when I start adding lots of stuff to my tank I may upgrade to a bigger better model ... :-)

Took me a little while to get the thing working and pulling off nasties but now it is working great .. I am trying and experiement right now as I have the added option of filtration on the one side of my skimmer .. I added some live sand to the trap there and the water goes through my skimmer where the bad stuff is pulled out , and now it goes through a section of live sand to add things needed ...

I am also using the hang on filtration system that came with my tank in a similar maner .. I added a base of live sand and some small chunks of live rock I busted off a piece I wanted to make smaller ... I just put all that where you would normally put the carbon filters for FW ... trying something different .. It gives me more water movement and adds more live stuff for my tank ... Don't know if that is goinna be a good move or bad .... :-)

But a skimmer is helpful you will see how much yuck is in your water within a couple days .. From what I have read it usually takes a little while for a break in period and then whaaaa laaaa yuck in your cup ...
