| Bryozoan | Indiana is a LONG way from the nearest coral reef........ So I've decided to build my own ! Actually, I've tried / kept reef aquaria before....... Sometimes with no success, and sometimes with great success...... I'm definitely not a pro at this, and will probably become somewhat of a nuisance with never-ending questions and the like. Here's the equipment I'll be starting out with...... 120 gal glass aquarium 200 lbs Aragonite substrate 200 lbs cured liverock 2 X 400W 10000K Metal Halide lights 200W total HO Actinic flourescent lights Berlin Red Sea HO skimmer 10-12 Maxi-Jet Powerheads (900's & 1200's) 4 small powerheads (75 gph or less) Electronic wavemake for use with some of the powerheads I would like to start off with soft corals and some (3-6) small fish, eventually (maybe 6 months down the line) adding some LPS's and live plants. Any advice is welcome. Hope to chat with other Northern Indiana reef people soon ! Thanks, Jim Last edited by Michiana : 10-24-2006 at 04:10 PM. Reason: spelling |

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: Indiana is a LONG way from the nearest coral reef........ Sounds like you have done your research and are ready to go. Welcome to RS! Lots of friendly helpful people here. One advantage to having people from all over available is that you can often get a late nite response from another part of the globe. It can certainly help in those emergency situations. Post some pics when you can. We love pics.

| Wannabe Guru ![]() | Re: Indiana is a LONG way from the nearest coral reef........ Michiana welcome to RS Excellent size tank to start with ! Do you have the 2 X 400W 10000K Metal Halide lights already ? What is the dimensions of the tank ? If the tank is 24" tall have you considered going with 250 watters instead ? The heat generated by the 400 watters will be considerable and it would be unnecessary unless your going with higher kelvin bulbs in the 20k range and going SPS exclusively IMHO . Also I think you'll be disappointed with the Red Sea skimmer, if you have a sump I would go with an ASM or Euro-reef skimmer instead.
