Re: Hello!!

Sorry, I forgot to include that!! I have a 65 gallon that right now is just FOWLR. I haven't decided if I want to corals or not yet. I have a ways to go with the tank still. I am buying my LR piece by piece. I did score some really nice pieces from a guy on craigslist that was tearing down his tank! Found some cool hitchikers on those!!

Like I said, it's a work in progress!!! (the lighting sucks in those, sorry)

My fish include:

1 Coral Beauty
1 Fox Face Rabbit Fish
1 Red Bali Star
1 Green Brittle Star
1 Gold Banded Maroon Clownfish
2 Damsels left over from cycling that I haven't been able to get out yet
A few snails
An unidentified baby (or small) starfish that wa a hotchiker on the LR.

Re: Hello!!

Looks like you are off to a good start. I would love to see a pic of that stand as well. From what I can see it looks like an nice piece.
Be careful adding new fish with the maroon. They are very territorial and mine is downright mean.
Also I have had lots of trouble with keeping coral beauties so I certainly hope you have better luck than I have had with them. I eventually gave up after losing 3.
Thanks for the pics and be sure to keep us posted. Ask away if you have any questions. People here are great about helping.
What type of filtration do you have? You do appear to be pretty low on live rock so I was wondering what you were using while waiting to add more.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

I have a HOB filter and a Fluval 404. Same stuff I used with freshwater.

I actually just learned about the temperment of the clown yesterday. He doesn't seem to mess with anyone right now. He actaull stays off by himself for the most part. The Coral Beauty pretty much runs the tank! He was fighting witht he LR when I left this mornig!!

BTW, I will be getting a bunch of rock this weekend. Ideally how much should I have for a 65 gallon tank??

Re: Hello!!

Somewhere between 1 and 2 lbs per gallon is generally recommended.
Be careful adding a lot of new rock to a system that already has livestock. Even "cured" live rock can kick start a cycle and cause problems.
You may want to read the threads about "cooking" your live rock when new. You don't actually cook it, that is just what it is called. Basically, you put it somewhere in water with a powerhead etc so the inevitable dieoff can happen somewhere other than your tank with your fish.
I wouldn't worry so much about adding a piece here or there but if you are adding a significant amount at one time be careful and at the very least watch your tank parameters closely so you can catch any problem early.
Glad to hear your coral beauty is doing well. My maroon is fine with everybody already in the tank but man does he react if I add somebody new. Keep a close eye as you continue stocking the tank. He may need to go into fishy time out for a bit.
I would strongly recommend adding a skimmer to your system. This is probably the best piece of equipment you can have.
A skimmer, frequent water changes, and live rock are the things I consider most important to a successful saltwater system.
Enjoy!!

Re: Hello!!

Hello and Welcome to RS!
I second what Lynn is saying about adding more LR. Like she said most live rock will still have tissue on it that will decay and you very well may have another cycle.
