Talking Hey All ...

Hi all ... me and my daughter just started a 55gal saltwater fish tank about 2months and loving all the neat things that come from our rocks... we have a 55gal freshwater for about 2 1/2 years.... in our saltwater we have 41lb of live rock ... we have about 7 real fish and two cleaner fish ... we have some shrimp... we have a 50/50 light right now ... saving up to get the $$big lights$$ ... if you have any advise ... just let us know :-D ...

Would the big lights be Metal Halides? Or Power Compacts? You want to go with Metal Halides. Also what kind of filtration are you running on your tank? Do you have a Protein Skimmer?

for filtration we went with the RENA filstar canister filter the xp2, the man at the pet store said it would work the best for us, I hope he was right. No protein skimmer yet, they said that I did not need one until a little later when we get more things in our tank. As for lights we are not sure what to get I would rather not have one that puts out alot of heat. any advise on that?

Thanks

Re: Hey All ...

The general rule of thumb is 1" of fish per gallon of water.
I certainly wouldn't add any more fish right now especially since your tank is only 2 months old and needs time to become a stable environment.

You may want to consider taking the Damsels back and seeing if you can trade for something? Especially if they are showing aggression.

These little guys are hard to catch, I'm going to keep trying and they said they would take them back if I can catch them.
thanks

Re: Hey All ...

Well if you really want an anenome then you are going to have to have Metal Halides. With these you will be able to keep what ever corals you want, clams, frogspawn, torch, hammer ect. These also do put out heat, most people can get away using fans to cool.

You deffinatly need to get a protein skimmer on there. The canister filter lower pH rapidly. You will have a real hard time keeping it up without a protein skimmer. The skimmer will balance out some of what the canisters produce.

If you have any other questions let us know.

Matt

Re: Hey All ...

Welcome to RS!
As you can see lots of friendly helpful people here.
Post some pics when yiu can. We love to see people's tanks.
If you want an anemone you will definitely need high lighting, and a well established tank. Good luck catching the damsels. I had lots of fun till my lfs bought a trap that they rent to people. LOL, I think it is a great idea,
Anyway, enjoy your tank and enjoy RS.
