I got a problem

Alright i just got a 24g aquapod the big problem i got is that the water temp is at like 81-82 degrees. The fan is working fine and all i have is 20 lbs of sand and like 25 lbs of live rock right now. I removed the heater and the water temp is still staying consistent. If anyone has a solution to this problem please let me know. Thanks

Re: I got a problem

What is the room temp? If you are in a warm climate that is likely to be the problem. With my aquapod I had to raise the top up about 8 inches and add a couple of fans, but I live in Florida and haven't taken the plunge with a chiller yet.
Let's see what the others say, but 81-82 is a bit high, but not critical IMHO. Depends largely on what is going in the tank. Some things like the water a bit colder (like my seahorses) and some like it a bit on the warm side. I'm pretty new though so lets see what the real experts have to say. I do know that consistancy is more important that the degree marker. So keep it consistant as much as you can.

Re: I got a problem

Re: I got a problem

I ran my reef temp at 81-83 for a few years with no problems. I was very careful not to overstock it with fish since warmer water holds less oxygen.

Options:
  1. Leave it like it is.
  2. Turn your house AC WAY down... LOL~ Not very practical but I had to mention it...
  3. Add a clip on fan to blow across the water's surface. This will indeed lower the temp but it will also increase evaporation so be prepared to top off frequently!
  4. Add an overflow/sump which would increase the water volume thus offsetting the effects that the lights/pumps have on warming the water.
Whichever method you choose, make sure the temperature variation (day/night) stays within a 2-3 degrees. Larger fluctuations can cause stress.

Re: I got a problem

Can you please give us more information about the tank, where it's located and everything (not just live stock) that's in the tank? The more information you give us, the better able we'll be to help!

What equipment do you have in the tank including power heads?
These devices use the tank water to cool themselves down and if you have a faulty one or too many in a small tank then it can create a lot of heat.

What type of lighting do you have on the tank?
Ligh bulbs produce heat as a byproduct o creating light and this heat can affect small volumes of water much quicker then tanks with larger volumes of water, that's one of the challenges of small tanks.

Is the tank near a window? Does it get any direct or reflected sunlight shinning in it? When sun hits the tank it can heat up the water very quickly.

Anything else you can think of or see that could possibly cause heat around the area of the tank, let us know. Even if you aren't sure that it could be adding to the heating issue post it anyways and we can help figure it out.

One thing to note, temperatures in small volumes of water can vary fairly rapidly. You will need to keep an eye on temperature fluctuation in the tank as it's possible that we can go too far with our suggestions on how to lower the temps in the tank. However since you don't have any fish, inverts or corals at the moment a bit of temperature variation isn't going to be a huge problem.

Re: I got a problem

it isn't a glass lid. It is the plastic hood with the built in lighting and everything there is a second port to the left with no fan in it or anything but it has a cover over it should i remove that and see if it will help circulate more heat out from the lighting.

Re: I got a problem

I got all stock equipment on the tank it has 64W 50/50 bulbs. Don't no what kind of pump it just says a submersible pump. The tank is located on west wall in my room with my window facin out to the south so it doesn't get any direct sun light. I also have a freshwater tank in my room and have no problems with the water temp with that one.
