Hi, I'm new.

Hi, all.

Discovered your site by accident!

Kept FW for 38 years (off & on), then FO marines for 7-odd years. I'll be setting up a smallish (32g) reef tank in the spring, and I'm trying to pick up all the wisdom I can beforehand.

Probable setup:

52" x 11" x 15", no sump.
2 x powerheads, tot flow c2500 l/hr + an Eheim external filter for carbon, PO4 removal and additional flow.
LR and SSB.
T5s and actinic tubes. (shallow tank!)
Probably mushrooms, polyps, etc - nothing too exotic, plus fish.

Any comments appreciated.
Nice to meet you, folks.

You've got it backward for a reef newbie... you're supposed to just buy everything you want, set it up and stock it in a week, then come and ask questions once you start running into problems.

Okay, tongue in cheek humor aside... the rest of your plan looks really good. I'm in the process of switching over to T5 lighting myself (combined with a single HQI halide bulb)... from what I've gathered in the past couple weeks of searching, they're the new shiznit.

Welcome to Reef Sanctuary.

Re: Hi, I'm new.

BTW, any of you guys over there seen / used V2 protein skimmers? They're quite new in the UK and I might well be getting one for the new setup: they're said to be quiet and (importantly) cheap!

Any ideas?

Welcome to RS cajen

A good skimmer is very important and something you don't want to skimp on. I have never heard of the V2 protein skimmers but I would research some more before investing money in it. Although cheap may seem attractive initially you may end up having to buy a second time. Just my .02 cents and speaking from experience unfortunately

Re: Hi, I'm new.

I Have Had Great Success With My 75 Gal Reef Tank Adhering To The "berlin Method". I Don't Have A Sump Either! 100 Lbs Of Live Rock 2 X 65 Watt Actinics And 2 X 65 Watt Trichromatic Compact Flourescents Coupled With Aggressive Protein Skimming/foam Fractionating Is My Formula For Success. I Don't Have Any Metal Halides So Tridacna Clams And Sps Corals Are Out Of The Question. Mushroom Corals, Leathers, Lps Corals, Turbinara, Plate, Xenia, Clavularia And The Like Are Thriving In This Environment. These Are Corals That Exist In 30-60 Feet Of Water In Their Natural Habitat. The Only Light That Filters Through At This Depth Is In The Blue Spectrum; Thus Making Actinics Imperative For Coral Growth. The Only Supplements That I Add Are Kent "tech I" And Tropic Marin "bio Calcium". Occasionally I Have To Add Some Aragonite Sand But This Set Up Has Been Easier To Maintain Than Any Of The Freshwater Systems I Have Kept. This Reef Tank Has Been Set Up For Over 4 Years! Good Luck With Your Project!

Re: Hi, I'm new.

Talk about a delayed reaction - 16 months later......!

My plan for the 53 incher was abandoned when the Mrs offered to buy me a new tank! It's a German Juwel Vision 260 (litres) bowfront (it had to look good as a piece of furniture).

It's a mixed reef with softies, LPS and a few SPS. I've got a few gorgonians and I'm thinking of specialising in these.

Re: Hi, I'm new.

Deliberately low aquascaping to give a sense of depth and space. No high-tech gear: can't afford it! Fish: Bangai cardinal, flame angel, pair of purple firefish, mimic tang, yellow foxface, royal gramma, threadfin goby, neon goby.
