Algae ID. Bryopsis??

So I'm monitoring my tank through the cycle phase and have hit the algae phase. I spotted this and was wondering, a/ what is it and b/ do I need to remove the rock, scrub the hell out of it, microwave it, boil it, scrub it, and put it back? I know there will be an algae problem for a little while but would like to minimise the damage

Feathery green strands (Bryopsis??)

Little green tuft - at the moment is bright green and wavy

Re: Algae ID. Bryopsis??

I would wait for more IDs but if it is Byropsis then yes you will want to remove, scrub, microwave, whatever. It is really hard to kill. Remember though, this will kill the live rock and you will be left with base rock. In a new tank with all of it's algae cycles, I would hesitate on the ID.
I'll send a PM to John and Boomer and see what they think.
I tend to trust Jay but would like to see more answers.

Re: Algae ID. Bryopsis??

Just a thought. As the tank is empty (and still cycling) could I cover it so it's completely dark for say a week or so. Would that work?

Re: Algae ID. Bryopsis??

I say Feather Caulerpa or Bryopsis on first pic and second one looks like HA.

Re: Algae ID. Bryopsis??

Those pics are just to far away for a real ID. The first one does looks like Byro, as its feathery appearance is quite thin and delicate, with well spaced "branchlets". The second one more than likely is one of the green "turf " algaes like Cladophora or Derbesia.

Re: Algae ID. Bryopsis??

Taking major action over a few sprigs of algae is over reacting IMO. Just be patient and be sure that you maintain good husbandry practices and work toward strategies for nutrient export (PO4, NO3).

Re: Algae ID. Bryopsis??

It's only a few sprigs in that photos. I want to get rid of it before it becomes a problem

Re: Algae ID. Bryopsis??

Byropsis is pretty tough to get rid of, so I would watch it closely.
During the cycle it is likely to grow and then we can get a more positive ID.
