Live Plants

Hello, I have been wanting to know some tips and some plants that are really good to start off with. I got a 125g That I would like to get some live plants/live rock into it. I got a Snow flake eel, angel fish, six line wrasse I think, Also what kind of fish would go well with starting off plants.

Re: Live Plants

While I have seen some marine plants at Liveaquaria.com, I don't have any experience with them. It seems that they are not nearly as popular as corals.
Do you not want to keep corals because of your livestock?

Re: Live Plants

Well when ever i hear about a salt water tank I hear about corals. I have never heard of a SW tank with a bunch of live plants. Dont get me wrong coral looks amazing. I want to do something new my idea is sunken ship peices/parts all over plants growing in and out of them with peices of live rock around it.

Re: Live Plants

Hey, just because it seems like not a lot of people do it doesn't mean it's not cool! It sounds very nice. I wish I could be of more help with the plants. I saw it on the unanswered threads list and thought it was for freshwater. I wish you luck and hope to see pictures someday.

Re: Live Plants

There are few Marine Plants available and even fewer that are "doable".

Some people think of the Macro Algae as marine plants (Cheato etc) but they are actually a type of SeaWeed.

There are some "grasses" that grow in the marshes and shallows but they are not easy to do. "framerguy" (greg) was working on one and I'll try to get a link of it for you.

Live Rock Rubble will do the SAME thing as Bio-Balls and is NOT a suitable replacement for BIO-BALLS in a Reef System! It's ALL gotta go!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Live Plants

I've got to generally agree with BigAl here. Unless you want to use various forms of macro algae, most SW plants do not do well.

Quite a few macro algaes do look just fine in a tank, and they are no big problem as long as you keep them under control. This all comes down to what you want out of the tank, and if you like the effect, there is no reason not to go this route.

HI mangroves will work i have heard some good thinging about them and what they do for SW dont try to put any kind of amazon swords in your tank or most of any fresh water plant cus they will die they dont like salt

Re: Live Plants

The only plantlike stuff that I grow is macro chaeto algae, and ultimately I throw it away. Sorry I can't be of more kelp here.

Re: Live Plants

glad it helped...just a tip...

it is easier sometimes to take a full macro, make lots of cuttings and plant them around the tank. some will take hold, some wont. eventually you get a better feel for how your tank does with certain algae and then you can progress. it takes more time i guess to have lots of full mature looking macros, but in the end the macros grow fast, and watching your system grow is what makes this hobby fun. After all, if you just want something to watch they sell flat screen tvs these days right?

also what works for coral isn't always ideal for macro

Yeah I put a used Reef light over my fuge thinking "if it grows coral it should grow MACRO algae well too."...
WRONG!!! It lived ok but never thrived. I replaced it with a cheap clip-on shop light with a cheap flood-lamp type of bulb and my Macro took on a whole new life. It grows silly fast and is as green and lush as can be.

Re: Live Plants

one of the nice things about algae is the cheaper the light the better it seems. i think the best tank setup i ever had was the wal-mart 10gallon kit as is. didn't change a single thing and it was "macro tank bulletproof"

i ended up putting on some coralifes..eh...things became harder and growth was stunted so i ended up going right back to those $3 bulbs.
