Algae ID

I'm not sure if I can going to get an answer to this question before I post a picture, which I can't do until tonight, but I need an ID on what I believe to be an algae that has started growing in my tank. :smck:

It is a hard, brown algae that is flat and shaped like circular disks. I tried to manually remove a piece and was only able to break of a small piece. If anybody has any thoughts I would love to hear them, if not I'll post a picture tonight. Thanks!!!

Re: Algae ID

I think you are on the right track, may be in the same family. Only difference is what I have is a much darker brown and stays flatter against the rock. What is the name of the algae in the pic?

Re: Algae ID

Those aren't algae but actually a type of coral called "mushroom". There are literally hundreds if not MORE different colors, textures and sizes of them. Here is a link that shows some different ones..

Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Re: Algae ID

I was under the impression that mushrooms were soft corals and most that I have seen will react to being messed with. What I have are hard, do not react to being touched, and will break if attempting to remove.

I believe Bob was right, this thread is useless without a pic. I'll post one tonight.

Re: Algae ID

If it is indeed Padina sp. should it be removed? And if so, what is the best way to do so? I've been doing a bit of research and I've heard both arguements...some people like it and some don't. If I mechanically remove it will it grow back?
