ID help please

Anyone know what this is? It grew on the rock with the mushrooms the part visible in the photo is about 3 inches long, there are an additional three more “branches” growing out of the rock.

Looks more like codium taylori to me. It's a macro algae.

really looks like the sponge in my tank.

id be interested to see what it looks like cut in a cross section.

never seen BLACK algae

Bob, it's not black it's a really dark olive green.

but the white "fleshy" stuff coming off the thing doesnt just SCREAM sponge to y'all?

Nope. Codium has a fuzzy texture to it at times. I have this in my local waters and see it all the time.

Yep. I had some in my first seahorse tank and they used it as hitching posts. LFS told me the tangs would eat it but they never touched it.
