cheato in brand new tank

Hey all, I have a friend who just received a bunch of cheeto from Woodstock, fantastic cheeto by the way. Can I put cheeto in a brand new tank? I am going to be setting one up next weekend and we didn't know if would harm the cycle ie: make the cycle longer or not long enough.

Re: cheeto in brand new tank

Glad you like the chaeto

Humm... If the new tank cycles strong and gets a high ammonia/nitrite spike, it may be harmful to the macro algae?
I'll tag along to see what others say....

Re: cheeto in brand new tank

Yes, from what I have read cheato is durable but only to nitrate.

Re: cheeto in new tank

NOOOO don't throw cheetos in your tank,it will turn the water orange!!!

Just kidding...Yes you can go ahead and use the chaeto without it messing with your tanks cycle. The cheato grows off of nutrients and not bacteria so you're good to go.

Re: cheeto in brand new tank

I think the only thing that slows chaeto growth(besides low nutrients) is the system being nitrogen depleted. Might want to wait until someone chimes in on this one for sure though.

Ok so whom do I believe since everyone seems to have completely opposite opinions? And I already got the cheeto's our of the aquarium, no orange side effects I can tell. lol

Re: cheeto in brand new tank

I think THIS is what I would do if I woke up in your shoes today...

If the current Chaeto is in good shape and in a good healthy tank (which it is right Brenda? *hint hint*) I would leave it there until after my new tank is cycled and ready for it. The main reason I say this is that the cycle may kill any beneficial pods and micro organisms living inside the stuff and this way they continue to grow and thrive until the tank is ready.

Do I think it will "hurt" the cycle to have it in there? I don't think so. Do I think it will help the cycle at all? I don't think so. It's not something I would consider "Mission Critical" either way but anything living in or on the Chaeto probably would not live through the cycle.

Hope this helps some!!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: cheeto in brand new tank

I'm with Al. The pods will suffer during the cycle and some will perish. If it IS in an established tank then leave it there. If it is already in the cycling tank and you don't have an established tank leave it there, some of the pods and algae will survive the cycle to reseed future prospects.

Well, Mine is a healthy tank now. Woodstock sent us TONS, and too much for my tank, so it is in the QT tank right now. Looks good though, not sure if it is getting enough water movement. we are going to have to add a better power head in there I think.

I may have to move it into the main tank until she's ready for it. but as you know my CURRENT tank is small. think it would be OK in the QT tank with another powerhead??
