| Midas Blenny | Nasty Red Algae on my Sand Hi all, I have what looks to be red algae on the sand in one corner of my tank. I read that it can come from a bad coral. I do have a bad plate coral thats dying? Or is it something else and how do I get rid of it? |

| Social Darwinism victim | Re: Nasty Red Algae on my Sand Pictures help!! If it's a dark red and you can easily suck it up it could be cyano bacteria. Suck it out with a turkey baster and do a water change. Are you cycling? I have some that comes and goes in my fish only tank. I find changing the carbon and ammonia chips in the canister filter help. I don't have a "standard" filtration setup on this one, the canister gets changed a lot so as not to produce a lot of nitrates.

| Do I look as lost as I am ![]() | Re: Nasty Red Algae on my Sand That could be any number of things but we need to know more about your tank... Age? Filtration? Type & # of power heads.. current water parameters what do you mean by "bad & dying plate coral"? Is there something "Wrong" in your tank causing this?

It's ALL gotta go!! Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change. Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian) This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%. | Neon dottyback | Re: Nasty Red Algae on my Sand Sounds like cyano but the dying plate coral is of concern

| Neon dottyback | Re: Nasty Red Algae on my Sand Add flow and competition and a well rounded clean up crew. Cyano is an easy problem to take care of once you nail it down. Check your phosphates and nitrates and report back. What is your current clean up crew like? How is the flow in the corner of your tank? |
