Diatom bloom?

So a couple days ago i started a topic about flatworm and was given some good advice. well in that topic i described what i think is a diatom bloom buti got a question. do diatom blooms happen 'IN' the sand bed. about an inch down from the surface i noticed som of the same brown 'Diatoms' in my sand you can see it through the glass... should i be worried or is this a normal occurance in diatom blooms if thats even what this is?...

Re: Diatom bloom?

I would say it's nothing to be concerned about. As detritus tends to collect in the substrate, the diatoms would likely follow.

Assuming this is a fairly new tank, a diatom bloom is very normal.

Re: Diatom bloom?

Diatoms feed on silicates exclusivly and form on the sand surface first then on rock. They will go away when there food supply is gone. They are greatly effected by flow, more flow less diatoms. If the growth under your sand is redish in color it is more than likely bacterial growth and thats a good thing.Diatoms are the oldest known living thing on earth so they are pretty good at what they do,but on there own they are not very mobile.penatrating a sand bed is not in there resume'.

Re: Diatom bloom?

I think redish brown is an adequate description, and yes it can be on the surface.
