Corraline?

I've been struggling to get the pH in my tank consistant so the calcium additive would be more effective and about 6 months ago I finally got the perfect balance. My pH is maintaining itself between 8.1 and 8.2 and my calcium is 400-420 (depending on when I test). Anyway, I started noticing these bright pink structures starting to grow in my LR once the pH and calcium started to balance out. I think it's just corraline algae but I've never seen it look like this. It's really difficult to get a good picture but it looks like little trees. They're really hard and small, maybe 3-4mm. These are the best pictures I could get. Also...is the last picture a sponge?

Re: Corraline?

nope, that was the best one I could get. I've had that one for a while along with another one that looks exactly the same. Any idea about the pink stuff?

Re: Corraline?

The coralline is the pink and purple stuff on the rocks that look like they are painted. In the bottom picture, it's to the left of the feather duster and in the bottom right. The thing in the middle of the pic looks like a sponge.

Re: Corraline?

I have a bunch of those sponges... they don't seem to hurt anything.

The pink stuff I'm asking about doesn't look like it's painted on. It looks like tiny trees standing up on the rocks.

Re: Corraline?

Tiny trees may be feather dusters.

Sponge is good!

Re: Corraline?

Ok, guys. I know the pictures weren't very good but I figured out what it is. I found a picture online that looks a LOT like what I have. It's deposits of coraline algae. Here's the pic.

Re: Corraline?

The tiny trees are foraminiferans and the painted on looking stuff is coralline.

Foraminiferans are tiny organisms mostly visible with a microscope. Like I said before, it's deposits of coraline algae. It looks exactly like the picture I just posted but hot pink and smaller. There are giant beds of it around Ireland. It's found in giants sub-tidal beds along the wesr coast of Ireland and is very rare.

I've had a sw tank for 3 years and I know what normal coraline algae looks like. The "trees" are structures growing on the rocks, not tiny organisms.
