Re: mangroves?

Yes. It is very hard to get them acclimated but if you are patient they will grow.

Re: mangroves?

Get them when they are new sprouts with no leaves. Put them in saltwater and sunlight to get them to grow. Some people say you can start them in fresh and then move them but that is not the case.
They are also not a great nutrient exporter since they grow so slowly. Be sure to rinse the salt off of the leaves daily and look carefully for dying leaves. If the leaves fall back into the water so do the nutrients you are trying to get rid of.
Now if you somehow have a vey large stand of mangroves that is an entirely different story.

Re: mangroves?

I have mangroves in my fresh water terririum that grew nicely, and I also have some in my fuge that are growing very very slow.

About a week ago I took 2 plants from the fresh water and planted in the fuge (as an experiment) and so far so good, wasn't sure what to expect...yet another experiment...

Mut I must say they do very well in fresh water...???

Re: mangroves?

If you want to export nutrient with them I believe you need to keep 5 per gallon or something like that. I just grow one. It's nice to have a plant in the tank and see something different. My refugium is bare bottom so I use a a fish net box filled with Mineral Mud to grow it in. Here are some pictures.

Re: mangroves?

Sorry if I mis-spoke. Yes they certainly will grow in fresh or salt or even brackish. What is important is that they grow roots in the same type of water they will live in long term. According to the books I have read the ones you moved from fresh to salt will likely not last long.

Re: mangroves?

Even if they have a very minimal root system? I moved them when they bloomed the first 2 leaves.

I hope it works, but I was worried about this from the begining.

I got like 15 sprouts, and a bunch of seeds, the seeds are growing pretty good too. But they just float on the top of the water with the roots flowing everywhere right now...

Thanks for the advice.

Re: mangroves?

They need to be planted in a substrate like Mineral or Miracle Mud. I have tried in the past to just float them and found planting them to work best.
If you sprouted them in fresh water you need to slowly raise the salinity over a few months so they don't go into shock.

Re: mangroves?

ScubaDrew has them in his fuge.
He starts talking about them at post #165 in his tank's chronicle
stt-vt-5.

I believe Drew is on a boat off the Virgin Isle for the next 2 weeks otherwise I would suggest you pm him.

Re: mangroves?

The seeds sprouted in saltwater.
I was just afraid to put the plants in the ground because of the leaves growing upward.

Can the whole plant be suberged leaves and all?

Re: mangroves?

So there is no benefit to growing just one in the fuge?
