Re: mangroves?

I don't think a "single" will do a lot other than looking really COOL!

I've been talking with Drew fairly extensively over the last couple of weeks about groves. He said they CAN indeed be totally submerged. He said the biggest caution is making sure you can see/address the roots. Don't just bury them in your substrate and forget about them. The roots can over time swell and break the glass.

I'm planning to suspend them in my fuge in a "Grove Tray" of some sort. Going to keep them totally submerged to not have to worry about "cleaning the leaves" for a while.

I get a lot from just one. It's all about me though. Doesn't do a damn thing for the tank i am afraid.

Re: mangroves?

that's what it's really ALL about!

I'm seriously thinking about doing a "Display Mangrove Fuge" (Drew's idea) in the future. I just like the LOOK of the mangroves.

Re: mangroves?

I am starting some in my 'mangrove' fuge. I contacted Leroy at GARF who sent me 6 stalks and instructions on how to 'plant' them - he said to take a piece of styrofoam, poke a hole through it, put the stalk through it and let it float in the tank. The roots will grow but not being attached to anything wont be permanent. He also said to pinch off the top two leaves once it sprouts 4 leaves and it will branch out and be more of a bonsai effect than a stalk effect.... I'm putting that plan into action tomorrow...

Re: mangroves?

I cannot see how you could get them to survive long term fully submerged. I have never heard of that working. Tell me if you have any luck with it. ALSO, has there been any real testing done on how many you need to make a difference in the tank? Or is everyone just spouting off random rumors that they have heard over time?

Most aquarium lighting isnt the right kelvin. I have a 40g seagrass/mangrove tank and I have 6700k over that. Most DT's have 10-14k plus actinics.

When I had mangroves in my DT, they didnt survive because of the lighting variation.

And yes, you can have the mangrove submerged, but not too deep. I would not have the leaves submerged more than a few inches at most.

Re: mangroves?

Nice refugium Elliott! Once the leaves are clearing the water ever just a bit start to spray them with fresh water. You need to wash the leaves off of salt. Also when they start to sprout new buds they actually drink the fresh water. Since my mangrove took off i get a new set of leaves about once a month now. I only have one i have been working with and a new guy who is under water at the moment. My main one is about two feet tall. This it it in a 75 gallon.

Re: mangroves?

Thanks for the advice. I have never heard to spray them with freshwater, but it makes perfect sense....its like the natural rain.
