Re: Lighting

I prefer 250 watt SE MH with square pin PC supplemental actinics.

I am not that familiar with DE HQI MH nor T5 bulbs to make a comment about them.

Re: Lighting

Doesn't it really depend on what you're looking to get out of your tank? For instances, since i'm a rookie at this i'm only doing low light corals so a PC will do just fine. If I had a MH setup, wouldn't that be overdoing it a little? But I think everyone's goal is to eventually have a setup that requires MH.

Re: Lighting

With regards to lighting I do not think that whether you are a beginner or the most advanced your lights should change. I believe that when you buy good you buy once. As far as I am concerned I believe the more light the better. 400 watt halides and as many VHO's or t-5's that you can fit around them. starter corals will not do any worse under better lighting. The sun is considerate of no PAR animals.

I disagree. Low light corals will NOT do well in a very intense lighting environment even some SPS corals MUST be slowly aclimated to more intense lighting. I almost lost all of my Monti Caps because of poor light acclimation as well my Trachyphyllia almost totally receded under MH, it was in the substrate about 25" below the lighting.

Re: Lighting

with aclimation they do do better in my experience,,,,many factors are involved, PAR, depth, spectrum, aclimtion,,etc. supposedly low light leathers radiate and open largely and have great growth under MH,,,,

Re: Lighting

I have a Toadstool that was growing well when it was in the substrate but I decided to move it up to the top portion of the rockwork so it would have plenty of room to grow and in 4 months I have noticed very little if any growth now this could be due to many different factors but just my experience. Also my Trachyphyllia has almost completely recovered since I shaded it from any direct light.

Re: Lighting

Low light corals should obviously be kept in the lower parts of the reef, however, unless they were collected in water deeper than 60 to 90 feet they should acclimate to anything if the correct kelvin ratings are given. For example a low light coral should be acclimated to strong lighting with a higher kelvin rating then slowly acclimated to that which you preffer.

Re: Lighting

Can they be acclimated ? Yes they can , will they do as well IME no. Many LPS corals come from turbid lagoons or deeper water and are not exposed to very intense light, very different from the reef-building corals.
