Re: Here I go The Spotted Manderin

yeah really this is amazing to actually see a hobbyist getting this far with such a hard fish to even keep for a long time let alone get to eat anything else!!! if we could give trophies on this site i totally would give you one!

my only question is what day is metsmorphisis? are you going to get your babies to eat flake and brine and all the other prepared foods?

congrats yet again!!!!

For something that's suppose to be relaxing, you sure seem aggravated!

Why are your clownfish black and white? Were they cheaper because they're the wrong color?

sticking with the 29 gallon!

Re: Here I go The Spotted Manderin

You really want to stay away from brine shrimp unless ur using it to train onto other foods. Brine has very little nutritional value. Im sure he will be training all other foods.

Honestly out side of freshwater this is the first marine species that i have had any luck with. my cardinals swallow the eggs and my clowns seem to be on a much longer love strike than the mandarins went on

Metamorphosis hits around day 16 to day 30 depending on feed according to Matthew Wittenrich

Re: Here I go The Spotted Manderin

Well I'd say congrats on what you've already accomplished!! I'm just trying to get my S. Splendidus to start spawning for me. What are you feeding mandarins? Some info on tank conditions might be helpful to me. Thanks and great job!!!

Re: Here I go The Spotted Manderin

I have a 120 reef with two 6 x6.5 bins full of live rock rubble hidden in the rock work for pods to reproduce. I had the male first and added the female a few months later. The female is noticably smaller than the male and this helps in pairing the two. I also noticed that both fish where taking frozen brine and mysid shrimp so i put a baby food jar in the tank and put frozen foods in there for the mandarins to eat spawning occured about a month after the introduction of the female (July)and i didn't really try to raise these fish until this month. I don't feel like i'm doing anything out of teh ordenary when it comes to keeping these fish other than the fact that it's a large system and i make sure that they get fed.

its has been know you can bred them. its just the cost to do so prevents competing against the easily found/caught ones. to pay for the costs involed in breeding them the price would quadruped++...you as the customer are much more likely to buy the much cheaper wild caught ones.

that doesnt take anything away from surfzone's skills........i really hope they reach fish hood. if they do i want to get inline right now to buy one from ya

you can inflate the cost some to help support your efforts

Re: Here I go The Spotted Manderin

Well maybe some people but not me. I would gladly pay the price for a captive raised fish anyday of the week. I have no experiance breeding fish but I know how much work is involved. All the fish I do buy I try and get captive bred. The sooner people in this hobby realize the importance of captive bred fish the better off we and our beautiful marine life will be.

awesome job man. this also gives you a chance to train them to eat dead foods at a young age.

Re: Here I go The Spotted Manderin

I hope i canget to fishood it will be much simpler to wean them to prepared foods young than it would be when they are adults. The color on the juvinal fish take a few weeks to come in after they settle

Check out this thread on MOFIB about the Green Mandarin Breeding. It's become my Bible for my Spotteds.
