Re: Grow out system?

I removed a portion of the shelf in order to make future maintenance easier.
I know I will need to replace the carbon in the SR7 approx once a month.

Post Ozone update*

Incase anyone is interested in my ozone reactor performance...

Here is my lengthy response to someone via PM. This may be helpful to others also...

Quote:
Yes, I still have and am using my MTC Ozone reactor, CAF12 (carbon air filter) and SR7 (carbon effluent filter).
I like their performance very much

I almost made a DIY reactor but needed this unit to function properly AND to be asthetically pleasing

No,I do not think that a small TLF reactor will hold enough carbon to replace the SR7. The SR7 hold about 2 liters of carbon and I am thinking it should even possibly be larger. Before I decide, I want to test the effluent with a chlorine test kit and determine if the carbon is removing the Ozone byproducts well enough. I guess an important factor regarding size would depend on the GPH you move through it. You want to be VERY sure that the water is filtered well. I would rather have too much carbon than not enough.

FYI... Boomer has suggested that the carbon in both be replaced roughly every month. I think I agree with this for the SR7 but only for the first 1-2 months and then less often. I noticed my ozone generator running constantly for the first few days but after the ORP rose, it runs only 30 minutes or so after a heavy feeding. I think it is very important to keep an eye (test the effluent for chlorine) on the byproducts and replace the carbon as needed.
The carbon in the CAF12 will be replaced every two months or so...

A few things that annoy me about my set up are:
1- The airline tubing size from the airpump is smaller than the tubing nipples on the MTC stuff so I had to go to Home Depot to get an adapter connect the 1/4" with the 3/8".
2- the top on the SR7 is annoying to remove with all the screws, but on the flip side, it is leak free...

I plan on buying a large quantity of carbon from BulkReefSupply soon as the small 3 liter containers do not last long.

Feed pump? I am using a Mag 9.5 and have it throttled WAY down. I plan on replacing it with something much smaller... maybe a mag 3 or 5...
That will give me plenty of flow as this setup is extemely efficient.

Ohhh... I can not get the pressure gauge to budge At first, that bothered me but the ORP rises very fast without it being pressurized so I just leave it alone now and don't worry about it...

Re: Grow out system?

Doni, it's time to write a book and get it published on this adventure. You have so much material just in these threads! I really hope to meet you at MACNA this year, so I can say I knew her when!

Re: Grow out system?

I must say that i have been following this build from day one and was surprised at every detail you put into this. Its such a great set up, you've thought of everything to give these clowns the best chance of life! I think that the coolest thing in your set up is the refugium with all of the "sliders" hanging out in there. They really seem to enjoy it in that video you took. This is a great set up and i am amazed.

It doesn't look like it from the pictures but your sump does not have any partitions correct? Your simply running a DSB and lots of cheato?

LOL Frankie! I do need a vacation

Actually, the online store is proving to be more difficult than raising the fish

I am preparing to change store fronts due to lack of support with the current one..

Re: Grow out system?

Wish I could help you but I stink at this stuff. It is good to know though that you will be a pro soon and can help me setup one for my frag tank I plan on doing this summer

Re: Grow out system?

Any updates? I noticed in another thread that you sold or are selling the ozone reactor. Have you switched to a UV sterilizer?
