Are my clowns tryin to spawn??

I have two false percula that have picked a half clam shell in the corner of the tank to call home. At least thats what I am assuming, the female is always cleaning and clearing the shell. This all seems like breeding behavior to me but......they are too young. They cant be more than 8 months old I wouldnt think. The female is maybe 2 1/2 inches and the male about a 1/2 inch short of her. Point being should I be on the lookout or is this just "teenager" behavior?

My two perc babies do that too. I think you're right; they're too young.

Re: Are my clowns tryin to spawn??

If you can find it, a great read on the subject of breeding clowns is located in the book:

"The Marine Aquarium Handbook - Beginner to Breeder by Martin A. Moe, Jr."

I picked this book up at a book store back in the early 80's and at that time considered it to be way ahead of it's time. Still to this day, I refer to it often. It was first printed in 1982 and contains a wealth of information on how to go about setting up a breeder tank, which is what you will need with clown fish. They are very territorial and will kill other fish that happen into their mating arena.

Good luck in finding it. If you do get your hands on a copy you will really enjoy the read! It's worth the search.

If they clean and 'dance/shimmy' then that is definately a precursor to spawning. My clown pair recently started 'dancing' and cleaning a rock so I expect them to spawn soon.

Re: Are my clowns tryin to spawn??

Hey thanks everyone, the female twiches a couple times a day. I am woried about the territorial thing because the chromis gravitate towards the clowns. They always follow them around, so I hope nothing bad happens. Watch a lear n i suppose though huh

Re: Are my clowns tryin to spawn??

Hopefully soon!

I'm waiting on my perculas to breed too. I'm pretty sure it's not going to happen for another year or two since they're still young, but I can still hope!
