growing phytoplankton question?

According to Melevsreef.com, he uses miracle grow to start off the plankton. That seems a little odd to me. I am not doubting that he knows what he is doing, but that doesn't seem safe to me. Is this okay to do?

Miracle grow is just fertilizer, thats basically nutrients, thats part of the algae issue associated wit dt's phyto and home brew, your adding phytoplankton and nutrient, use cautiously. Steve
