Yellow Tang question

My wife got a yellow tang about 4 days ago. I was just curious about its behavior, I didn't notice anything the first day but today I noticed it jerking around and rubbing its body against the rocks, it just seems to be agitated and shy. It has been eating just fine, mysis shrimp and algae. The only other fish in the tank are some tiny spotted cardinals. I'll post the pics of the fish.
I guess we just need to know if this is normal behavior or if it could be something else. Thanks in advance.

Steve

Re: Yellow Tang question

Nice fish The scratching and darting could be a sign of disease. Keep an eye open for any white spots. In the meantime, keep it fed well and use garlic in its food (immune system builder). Keep in mind that yellow tangs are VERY territorial so any fish you add later on may get picked on.

Re: Yellow Tang question

I would set up a QT just in case you need to medicate him if he does not get any better.

Ditto on the Garlic, stuff works wonders.

Re: Yellow Tang question

10-4 Woodstock,
The only white on its body are a white lateral line and the two spots on opposite sides of the tail, so it should be easy to see anything that pops up. I have been reading up on the behavior of the Tangs and so far every one has said the same thing about them being bullies, but it gets along great with the Cardinals. How should I do the garlic thing, on the sheets of algae or try it with the mysis shrimp, but the Cardinals eat the shrimp faster than the Tang can. The Tang seems to like to eat the ones that make it to the sand versus the ones floating in the water column.

Again I can't say enough about the help ya'll give to the newbs like me.
Thanks again,
Steve

Re: Yellow Tang question

She seems like she has slowed down a little with the rubbing and jerking. She definately likes the garlic algae and she has tore up msome of the shrimp that got by the Cardinals. That YT we have is smart too, I noticed her looking for the Blood Shrimp I have in the tank, she found it underneath one of the rocks and layed on her side on the sand a scooted up under the rock to get cleaned. I was wondering why the shrimp hasn't come out for a day when I saw what looked like two of them under the rock and lo and behold it molted and now the molt is dried and being show cased on the tank lid. Here's a pic that I could get of them together, I will try and get one of her sliding under the rock when I get home.

Re: Yellow Tang question

The Tang could be carrying the parasite without any visible spots, the fact that it's looking for a cleaning isn't a good sign, I would definitely keep an eye on him. How long has your tank been setup ? Is it a reef or FO ? Can you give us your current fish list ?
