Re: New Tank build update

Looks great! I personally would put some pulls on. Not necessarily brass pulls either.

Well all the oak bead is on the stand and I got a coat of polyurethane on it this morning. I ordered some rope handles to put on the doors so I can get them off when I need to work inside.

Solid Pewter Antique Style Braided Ropes Pull

I also ordered a fan and two oak grills to install on each side of the stand so I can move the hot air out of the sump area and help keep the tank cool.

Cabinet Fan Kit: Vantec Stealth 120mm (4.72 inch) Fan, Wood Panel, Fan Grill, AC Power with Fan Speed Controller

All that I have left to do is some trim work around the base to tie the stand into the wainscot and hide a power cord on the left side of the stand. I also want to blacken the back of the tank (I almost painted it but I got some negative feedback on that idea) Anyway, I found some 1/2 inch black foam that will fit between the tank and the wall and I am thinking about trying that out as a background. I am open to ideas if anyone has a better one...

The fish seem to be happy. I had a jump in the NO2 (0.25) after adding the two tangs but I did two 20% water changes last week and it has been down and stable for about the last 5 or 6 days now. I have not really seen any NH3 or NO3 to speak of since I started the tank. I don't plan on adding any more fish for a couple of months. I want to give it time to settle in before adding anything else. Anyway, enjoy the photos.

Re: New Tank build update

I got all the oak on the stand and installed the doors and began having a problems with high temps and my GFI tripping. I figured it must be from the sump being closed up so tight with no air circulation so I went on line in search of a fan. I came across these guys and ordered a fan and 2 oak grills from them. I installed everything this morning, plugged in the fan and not long after closing the stand doors the temp dropped a degree. I wasn't able to mount the oak grills the way the instructions said because they had a couple of cheesy wood tabs to drive the screws into and needless to say, they broke first thing. Anyway, I cut a 4 1/2" hole in each side of the stand, mounted the fan on the inside of one of the holes and placed a grill over the outside of both cutouts. It actually looks fine and it really makes a difference in moving the air through the stand and around the sump. I will have to wait a couple of days to make sure it keeps the dampness down and doesn't trip my GFI again but with the way things look now, I think it will work fine.

Here is where I got the fan and oak grills:

Re: New Tank build update

Amazing job Jim... it looks awesome. After reading through this entire thread on the development of your tank... I knew it was 90g but it always look kind of small in the pictures until that second to last picture of your yellow and hippo tang looking so tiny in your tank, lol. Really put it all into perspective on the scale and the amount of work and passion that went into this project. If your reefing skills are even 10% as good as your carpentry skills, then I would say you have some happy fish and corals in your future

Beautiful... beautiful job...

Beautiful... beautiful job...
Thanks you very much for your kind words... My dad always told me "Son, if something is worth doing, then it's worth doing right" and I have always lived by that philosophy. I have never been known to do anything half way and that includes taking care of my fish. My favorite pass time now is to put a pillow on the floor in front of the tank and just lay there and watch them swim around. Funny how some of the smallest things in life give you the most reward.

You may have noticed in that last photo that I still need to do some trim work around the stand to tie it in with the wainscot. Not to worry, I am going down in the morning to pick up some quarter round stock and get those edges trimmed out. I also get getting my handles in for the front panels tomorrow and that should make it look really nice...

Thanks again, Jim

Keep in mind that if you order the oak grills then don't expect to be able to mount the fan to it like the instructions suggest. They are fine to attach to the outside of a stand but I can't see them supporting a fan as they claims.
