Re: New Tank build update

Build update... I am still waiting on the mill to send my beaded oak so I can finish the stand and hood. I called them again this week and at least this time they said my order had been milled. They were supposed to ship it last week. I will just have to wait and see...

Latest photos:
Last rock adjustment:

Added 3 Damsels on 6-11 and then added 2 Clowns, 2 Chromis and a Camel Shrimp on 6-19. I plan on waiting a couple of weeks and adding a Blue and a Yellow Tang to the mix. I also have a cleaner crew on the way. It should be here next Saturday:

Re: New Tank build update

Well, I finally got Pay Pal to order a $150.00 refund for the oak bread board that I ordered on April 5th and still haven't received. I couldn't get any straight answers from the mill and the sales person wouldn't answer any of my emails. The good news is I found another company that mills oak bead board and they shipped it the day after I ordered it. It will arrive here on Thursday, which is perfect because I am off on Thu. through Sat. Anyway, I will update the photo once I get the stand finished. This should really look nice!

Re: New Tank build update

What a beautiful set up Jim! We have just started a new tank and I too am trying to do everything just right.. did you ever have your ammonia spike? How long did it take for the tank to cycle with the dead rock? Did you go the deli shrimp route?

Can't wait to see it with the beadboard!!

Thanks... The bead board arrives tomorrow so I plan to work on it this weekend (I am off Thursday through Saturday). I should have some photos of the finished stand soon and I will be sure to post an update. I never did see an ammonia spike even though I placed about 6 deli shrimp in the tank over a 2 week period. I think it might have been because I first placed 50 pounds of really nice live rock form the LFS. I added 100 pounds of dead rock about a week after the LR. The tank has been up for a month now and still no NO2 or NO3 so far. I have had 6 small fish (3 damsels, 2 chromis, 1 clown) in it for about 2 weeks now and the algae was starting to take over so I placed a cleaner crew in it last Saturday. The crew consists of about 15 hermit crabs and a bunch of different kinds of snails (100+). So far so good. I did my first water change this week and everything went fine. I am still checking the water every day and I expect to at least some NO3 at some point. Maybe after I get a few more inhabitants. I am thinking I will add 4 more chromis and a small Yellow Tang this week and continue to watch things. Anyway, I should have some more pictures for the thread this weekend.

Jim

Let me just say that I won't order anything from Oak Specialties (Tom's Quality Millwork) again. I don't know about the quality of the wood but the service sucked!

On the other hand, I told Baird Brothers (the new guys) that if the quality of their oak is as good as their service (they shipped the day after I placed the order) then I will be back. I got a feeling this stand is going to look really nice with Baird Brothers oak bead board on it. Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods

Anyway, I will have more pictures up as soon as it is finished...

Jim

Re: New Tank build update

What do you know, I got a break and the oak bead board arrived about noon today. Real quality stuff!!! Anyway, I couldn't wait to get to work on it so I braved the 105 degrees out side and got all of the pieces cut out this afternoon. I have numbered all of them and I plan on taking them all down in the morning and staining them. I should have them mounted on the stand tomorrow evening. Then on Saturday I can get a couple coats of polyurethane on it. Anyway here are a couple of pictures.

I am debating whether or not to put some brass knobs on the two door or if I should just leave them plain. Let me know what you guys think...

Jim

Re: New Tank build update

Well all that's left to do is a little trim work and a couple coats of Polyurethane. I still haven't decided on the brass knobs. I kind of think a couple of really nice ones would dress it up nice but I don't know, I will see how it goes... Jim
