Re: New Tank build update

Jim your tank looks great! Your tank will be free of dust before you know it. Your skimmer looks to be pulling alot. Just a few questions. How many inches of water is your skimmer sitting in and where's the water line in your skimmer?

It's operating level is between 6 and 8 inches of water so when I built the sump I placed the discharge baffle in the skimmer chamber right at the 8 inch mark. After looking at it this morning I realize I should have made it 7 1/2 inches to account for the over flow level. With this in mind, I placed the skimmer on top of some 1/2 inch PVC pipe to raise it up and it looks better now. The water level in the skimmer was way up into the discharge cylinder when I took the picture this morning but I have been making adjustments to it most of the day and now it is about an inch above the water level of the sump chamber. It seems like the more trash in the foam the higher it climbs. It looks a little more under control now than it did this morning. Please give me any tips you can on adjusting this device because i have no idea what to look for.

I just found this site for my skimmer so I have set it to the setting explained here.

Thanks, Jim

Re: New Tank build update

WOW! I just made some adjustments to my skimmer, now that I have some idea of what to look for, and it really looks good. I am getting a nice concentrated foam in the cup and not nearly as much water. Once I cleaned the cup I could actually identify where the water column was. This is working out much better now. I am now looking forward to having a clear tank in a couple of days.

Re: New Tank build update

That last skimmer adjustment must have been a good move because I got up this morning and the tank is all but crystal clear. I am going down today and pick up about 50 pounds of live rock from the LFS. I also have a 100 pound shipment of of dry rock due in today. I will throw a deli shrimp in the tank this evening and get the cycle started.

Re: New Tank build update

The tank has cleared up nicely over the last couple of days. The oak I ordered for the cabinet should be milled and shipped this week. I had hoped to get the cabinet finished this week. I am having surgery on my shoulder next Thursday so it looks like it will be a while before i can work on it again. I expect that dry rock to arrive tomorrow. Here are a few new pictures. Oh, we found some critters on our live rock already. I hope they make it through the ammonia spike.

Jim

It is about 5 inches deep on average. I am not sure how much space it took up. It is a deep bed but that is what I was told I needed. Guess I will see...

I was told that I need 4 to 6 inches of sand when I put my tank together so I settled for 5 inches but now I am wondering if that is too deep. What do you guys think?

Re: New Tank build update

I think it will work just fine, after you get other things in there it won't even be noticed!

Any word on the bead board?
