Re: New Tank build update

Great Work Jim! The shells will look really cool, also look for some bleached corals. I've bleached a few of mine that have died and they make cool little decorations. Okay, as I'm typing this and looking back at your pictures, I keep walking into my living room. Can I use your Floating Hood Idea? I think I might have an idea for my corner tank.

Sure I don't mind... I have also decided not to put hinges on the doors. I am going to attach the bead board slats to the 3/4 birch ply doors and attach the door panels to the front of the stand with magnets. That way I can pull them off and get them out of the way when I clean my sump. Well, headed over to visit the Rockler web page to order them now. Have a good one guys...

Re: New Tank build update

Well, I start a 10 day vacation tomorrow and it is my plan to hit the shop first thing in the morning, satin the shelves and get everything varnished so I can get them back up on the wall Monday. I just fired off an email to the mill that is supposed to ship my beaded oak and asked them what the holdup was. I ordered it on May 6th and it still isn't here. I am starting to think they just planted the tree and they are waiting for it to grow. I had hoped to have water in the tank by the time I go back to work on June 7th. Oh well, I will keep my fingers crossed and we will see how it goes...

I have decided I am going to start mixing the water as soon as I get the shelves done this weekend and get them mounted on the wall. I can put the beaded oak on at any time. This way I can at least start cycling the tank and getting it ready for some fish. Oh and thanks for the offer of corals but it is going to be some time before I am able to place anything like that in the tank. I want to be sure things are well established and that will be some months down the road.

Re: New Tank build update

I love the design. It is so neat and precise.
I wish I could do something like that, but in this house the shelves would be quickly covered with food and supplies.

Re: New Tank build update

Well, the trim on the stand, hood and shelves has been stained and varnished and remounted on the wall. I still haven't gotten my oak bead board. I am really going to give them a piece of my mind once it finally gets here. I sent them an email and and asked for an update and they still haven't responded. Anyway, I rinsed the dry sand this morning and placed it in the tank. I also started mixing salt and filling the tank with water this afternoon. I only got it about 3/4 full before I ran out of RO/DI water so I will have to let the 30 gallon storage barrel fill over night and top the tank and sump off in the morning and start the skimmer.

Even with all the rinsing of the sand it is still quite cloudy but I expect a few days with the skimmer should clear it up. My dry rock hasn't arrived yet but I expect it will be here Monday. I was going to go down to the LFS and pick up about 40 pounds of live rock tomorrow but I thought I better ask before I do that. Will it be OK to put the live rock in the tank while the water is so cloudy or should I wait until it clears up?

Filling the tank

Thanks, Jim

Re: New Tank build update

Anthony Calfo recommends not to rinse aragonite sand. The dust, while not pretty, is good for the tank, and will actually dissolve and adding to the buffer system. Its called milk btw. Very beneficial

Per Anthony

Also ..This stuff is VERY milky...is this milk the same stuff they sell at the LFS called Arag-milk?
<all the same, yes>
Is it any good for anything like a buffer solution?
<yes... excellent, and the reason why it should not be rinsed. Just wet it in advance to dampen/saturate it... put it in an empty tank... fill slowly... distribute water flow effectively, and never worry abut a milky tank

Oops... I have one more bag so I will just wet it and add it to the tank. I must have had 10 people tell me to rinse it...

Re: New Tank build update

Oh I know. People are very used to rinsing sand and it is very unsightly. But like micro bubbles. Sometimes what we like and what is good are not the same.

But nothing is harmed. Just didn't want you to worry.

Besides, you can rinse that stuff 20 times and it still comes out. I know, I have done it too

Re: New Tank build update

Well, it is finally full. The skimmer is working overtime but it seems to be doing a good job. The auto fill works great and I was able to adjust the return flow so that the overflow is no longer making a huge sucking sound every 3 seconds. I will give it a few days to let the water clear up and I will go down and pick up some live rock and get it in the tank. Hopefully I can get it to cycle over the next couple of weeks so I can get a few fish in it. Now if I can just get my oak beadboard...
