Does Pondmaster = Mag Drive.... really?

I seem to be able to get a pondmaster 24 for around 200 dollars. This should give me the power of 700 gallons per hour at 13 feet of head. If this is really the same as the mag 24? Does anyone know this definitively? I can't see where I could go wrong. Seems cheap, still a Mag pump and has the power I need. Thought I'd be looking at, at least 500$ for one of these... is it too good to be true?

As far as I know, yes, except the pondmaster gives you a longer power cord...

I bought what was advertised as a Mag 9.5 last year from anouther hobbyist on one of the boards. Pondmaster 9.5 arrives in the mail...I called Danner, they said just what Scott says, same pump, "stainless steel" screws, longer power cord. That pump is still working today...

Great! Sounds like I may have alittle extra money to spend on something else. This same store told me that if I buy more than 50lbs. of live rock, I can pick any rock, out of any tank in the store for only 5 bucks a pound! I always want to support my local lfs and it looks like with this guys prices I will be able to.

Thanks for the responses.

GAAAAAH! ONLY $5.00 per lb.? Yikes...To me, that's high! While I agree that it's nice doing business locally, there comes a point at which price plays an important part in the decision making process...You should be able to get almost ANY high quality live rock delivered to you for $5.00/lb but you will have to cure it yourself..Last winter, I got Marshall Island rock delivered for about $3.75/lb...shop around, see what you can find...save some $$$ for a nice fish or coral...

I'd also post on some boards especially if there is a local yahoo group in your area, and sometimes you can find LR really cheap. I bought some cured for $1.50 a lb a couple of months ago, and I'm buying some soon off a guy for $3 a lb cause I'm buying 150lbs of it for a new system that I'm starting up. Deff look around, and you can get it cheap of the internet for $3-4. No you don't get to pick it out, but from what I've heard they send you really top notch pieces

Hmmmm. In the lfs it is usually 7 or 8 a pound around here. One place wants 9 bucks a pound for fiji. The stuff for the 5 bucks a pound is already cured and about 35 minutes from my house, so I am figuring there should be virtually no die off.

My wife almost divorced me when I cured 45 lbs. of stuff from Fosters and Smith last year... she couldn't take the smell. I am in a brand new house and if I tried that here... I'd be looking for a girlfriend!!!

I'll check the yahoo newsgroup... never thought of that.
thanks.

Also, (ahem..) check the for sale forums here, on Reef Central, Reefs.org, Saltwaterfish.com, RAG, and Craigslist.org. Lots of people selling rock all the time...

usually the stuff i see in the stores here,,what they call premium rock is brown and lifeless. no coraline no nuthin, and they want 7 bucks per lb. many times you can get great liverock with small encrusting corals and such. you can chisel them off and see if they make it in an established system, or scrub trhe rock with a fine wire brush to get off sponges and other die off and cure. do plenty of H20 changes with a cheap salt every day or so and skim, i have seen rock sprout fabulous growths and life if cure water is kept fairly clean.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Yeah... $200 is a bit steep for a Mag24... though my LFS charged me $99 for a Mag 5 when I was in a bind and didn't have any options...

When I started up both my tanks (the old one and the 'new and improved' one), I bought my rock online... it's kind of a toss-up because you never really know what you're gonna get, but it definitely will save you some cash. The last shipment I got was from marinedepot.com... 49lbs. of premium Fiji rock delivered 2nd day for $157... sure can't beat that price.

Locally, the one LFS wants $7.95/lb. for 'bare' rock, and $11.95/lb. for that same rock with a few aiptasia growing on it... lol!
It's tough to get good coralline growth when there's no coralline to start with.

Just food for thought.
