Macroalgae

Is there a benefit to keeping some macroalgae in the display tank. I do not have a light on the sump so i cannot keep any there. I had some but did not keep it...So any advice i hear it is good for water chemistry...Any suggestions and what type..

Re: Macroalgae

Any that I've put in my display hasn't lasted very long... It all gets eaten.

Re: Macroalgae

It will get gobbled up by most of your livestock if it's in your display. I would put a light on your sump though. Macroalgae has very great benefits.

Re: Macroalgae

Alot of people keep it in their "fuge" because it consumes what would normally feed the nuisance algae that can grow in the display. For the lighting, you dont really need much, many of us just use clip on lights with crappy bulbs, the algae will grow as long as there is some form of light.

Re: Macroalgae

yep just go to walmart and get a clip on reflector and a regular household bulb and put it over the sump. Simple and it is all you really need.

Re: Macroalgae

It depends on which MACRO you're using Chaeto doesn't get eaten readily so it can usually be kept in the DT.

But since you have a SUMP you are just a simple (as BLAKEJOHN pointed out) light away from having it in there. That's probably the simplest and more effective way to do it. Use some egg-crate if you need to make a special "divider" to keep it from making it to your Return Pump.

Live Rock Rubble will do the SAME thing as Bio-Balls and is NOT a suitable replacement for BIO-BALLS in a Reef System! It's ALL gotta go!!
