I've got pods, now what?

I was planning to upgrade from a 37 to a 90 gal in April, then May, then June.......now shooting for August 4th. I bought more LR in March and had it "curing" in a 45 gal rubbermaid tote with a Magnum 350, maxi jet, & bio wheel for filtration. In May I purchased some macroalgae and tossed that in there and used one of those spiral plant lights. Its now become its own 45 gal ecosystem filled with pods, snails, and filter feeding sponges, with some bonus red cyano, hair algae, and a few aptasia. During water changes, I'm seeing tons of pods (and mysis) in the filter pads and "running" up the magnum hoses. A lot of them will just swim away if held out of the water long enough (or crawl on my hand which kinda creeps me out), but there are tons that burrow deeper into the pads. I've got 2 pads that are full of them and are now just part of the temporary decor. When I make the switch, can I just put the pads in the refugium and hope they find better accomodations?

It would depend on what else is on the pads. If they are relatively clean then yes I would use them but if they are full of detrius then I would not put it in the new tank.

Thanks. Not actually much on them but pods and small tunicates/pineapple sponges.

Re: I've got pods, now what?

I've "dispatched" 3 aiptasia already and there's one attached to the side of the rubbermaid. I'm on the lookout and will take care of them prior to the big move.

Can't wait to see the new tank, and I would try to get all the pods I can into the new system.

btw, I like your avatar.

Re: I've got pods, now what?

What I did was put some CLEAN filter media into my FUGE a few weeks before the "Move" in order to let pods start "housing" in it. Then when the new system was up and running I just transported the "occupied" filter media into the new FUGE and let the pods take up residence in the new home. Within just a few hours my new fuge had a booming "Pod-pulation"

with a SW set up there is one basic fundamental rule that we ALL should follow
When in doubt... wait it out. This means take it slow and let the tank "develop" and don't rush it. Time is your friend

Re: I've got pods, now what?

Thanks PEMfish, I've been waiting long enough to see it myself; had to make some adjustments to the stand so it would accomodate my skimmer. My avatar is Fat Baby Head - the spoiled cat who prefers her water straight from the tap.

Thanks BigAl - During the last water change, I tossed the old filter media and pruned macro in the bucket of water and left it. 4 days later I went to pitch it and that's when I noticed all the pods. Like a true fish dork, I sat on my porch with a brine net, the bucket of stagnant water, and a cup collecting the pods. I "caught" about 27 and put them back in. They must really like to uh, multiply cuz now they're all over.

I suppose I could just do the same when I make the move.
