Question for 75 Gallon filtration.

Currently I have a 75 Gallon, with 80LBs of live sand and about 20lbs of live rock, a 100gal cap. instant ocean seaclone protein skimmer, a marineland 400, and 150, both with bio-wheels. I dumped 2 bottles of Bio-spira. i have two bubbles, and a powerhead. I just bought a 8X54W with moonlights T-5 fixture which should be in this week. What else can I do to maintain a clean tank, all of my water parameters have been perfect for the last 5 days.

Also on a side note, can I install a refugum tank with out drilling holes. my tank is not pre-drilled and has tamperd glass. Thanks for the help

Re: Question for 75 Gallon filtration.

yes u can get a refugium. all u need is an external overflow box. i would remove the bio-wheels as they can house bad bacteria unless u clean them often. i have never heard of bio-spira what is it?

Re: Question for 75 Gallon filtration.

I would recommend you increase your LR by another 60-80 lbs. before you add any livestock. The fact that you added a nice lighting system I would assume a reef tank ? If so then get rid of the powerfilters you don't need them and they will eventually be a nitrate problem. I would also recommend you get a better skimmer, since you don't have a sump then my suggestion would be the Deltec MCE 600 or the Aqua-C Remora. I would also suggest a couple of more ph's for water movement particularly if it's going to be a reef.

Yes you can get a Hang on Tank refugium.

Re: Question for 75 Gallon filtration.

Wonder why the owner of the fish store told me the bio wheels would be best for my tank? So what is the purpose of a biowheel? I thought it was to house beneficial bacteria?

Re: Question for 75 Gallon filtration.

it can but more then likely it will house bad bacteria that raise nitrites. (of course i might be nitrates i confuse them often) either way its bad

Bio-wheels are fine to use in FW but in a reef they can be a problem as inverts can be very sensitive to high nitrates. The use of LR and a Deep Sand Bed will help reduce nitrates thru denitrifying bacteria. Also the use of a good skimmer can help reduce nitrates by removing dissolved organics before they break down.

Re: Question for 75 Gallon filtration.

The bio wheels and bio balls are ok for a little while but they start to hold bad bacteria that will hurt your tank. A refugium is the best filtration you can do for your tank.
