bio wheel

does anywhere here think bio-wheels are more nitrate factors then help? Still cant get my trates up 20 % ..did a 15 gallon change in my 42 gallon tank with 65 pounds of live rock and then some sand.. so thats like at least a 30 gallon change with noooo result do you think the wheel could be adding to it? should I take it out?

Re: bio wheel

Great question, my trates never budged and I have a biowheel as well. I have never figured it out. My trates finally dropped when the algae took over.

Re: bio wheel

Live rock should take care of your biological filtration. I think the biowheel would be unnecessary. If it was my tank, I would remove it, and keep an eye on the parameters in case there is a mini-cycle as the bacteria on the live rock grow to catch up.

Re: bio wheel

Any filter media CAN add nitrates. Unless you provide for the NEXT level of the nitrogen cycle any build up of detritus can lead to a Nitrate situation. That's where the Live Rock comes into play. It does the job of the bio-wheel AND it takes care of the next step too.

When in doubt... wait it out. This means take it slow and let the tank "develop" and don't rush it. Time is your friend

Re: bio wheel

Biowheels can be a source of nitrates if not cleaned on a regular basis. Many times detritus will get past the filter media & attach to the wheel where it will decay into the end product - nitrate. Most people don't bother to clean the wheel regularly.
