Unhappy Red hair algae??

Ohhhh I feel like i am asking too many questions.

But, is there such a thing as red hair algae?? I have a few places on my live rock that have some algae that is red (dark) and hair like (flowing in the tide) just showed up a few days ago.

Tank has been running since March, fully cycled in April, stocked in May (wanted to be sure it was ready)
1 Ocellaris clown,
1 wheeler gobie
1 crab (emerald)
3 nassarius snails

temp 78, Ph 8.4, Nitrate 0 Nitrite 5 amon. 0 SG 1.024

12.5 gal eclipse with stock lighting 13watt florecent bulbs.
I want to upgrade the lights, but want to treat the algae 1st

I live in an area where there and no LFS within 150 miles. I am going to Phoenix (120) miles on the 21st so I am going to pick up a turbo snail, certh snail and hermit crab. I am afraid of getting too many cleaners. I had a peppermint shrimp but he died.

I am hoping it is not slime algae, it is not on the bottom, only on a few areas of the rocks.

thanks for your input in advanced

Re: Red hair algae??

Sounds to me like cyano to me! here's a link to some info, but most typically I would say check to be sure there's enough water flow in the area where it's becoming a problem, as lack of flow can cause it to pop up. also check to be sure your nitrates and phosphates are in order

Cyano, Cyanos, Cyanobacteria, Blue-Green Algae, Algae, Red slime Algae, Slime Algae, Slime, Undesirable algae

hope this helps!

Awesome! if the water movement in your tank is adequate that should clean things up in no time. you may want to consider shortening your photo period for a few hours for a week or so to help speed the process along.

Andy has things under control.
Bout time. He's been slacking for too long.
Carry on.

What kind of water are you using for evaporation replacement?
Tap water can have all kinds of extra stuff you don't want.

Re: Red hair algae??

Distilled, we have no R/O available, the tank is in an office, and I am not that handy to install one.

This just showed up after 4 months, Actually I am a chronic overfeeder. I am in a program JK. I have altered my methods. My office manager is an underfeeder so we are working together.

Used a brush to clean it off today, have phosban coming tomorrow (supposed to be here today), we will see how it goes

Thanks all for the input. very appreciated

Re: Red hair algae??

Do you rinse your frozen foods?
They are purported to contain all kinds of phosphates.

Re: Red hair algae??

Aaaahhh yes - we need an overfeeders anomymous thread - me too! I battled cyano and found that improving the water and reducing the lighting period took care of it pretty quickly...

Re: Red hair algae??

You can definitely use some more snails. lol
Just a thought, I would skip the turbo. They can't turn themselves over if they fall on their back and can die that way.
A variety is nice as some snails hit different parts or deeper into nooks and crannies. Ceriths, margaritas, astrea.
The nassarious snails are great cleanup for leftovers on the sandbed.
