Talking shrimp?

ok, i just started a new 12 gl nano cube 2 days ago w/ 15 lbs LR and 20 lbs LS.
i keep hearing about adding a "deli shrimp" to speed long the cycling and build-up of beneficial bacteria. is the deli shrimp the already cooked shrimp used in shrimp cocktails or just a raw dead shrimp we cook at home? i know it's a basic question but that's why it's posted in this forum!

thanks for the assist! what an awesome site!

Re: shrimp?

Honestly either but I use the "raw cook at home" type. All you're doing is adding a "Food Source" for the bacteria that establish your biological filtration system.

Re: shrimp?

awesome, thanks big al! so i'm guessing a piece of raw dead fish that i caught (i'm a saltwater fisherman) would do the exact same thing?

Re: shrimp?

anything organic really...when it breaks down it creates ammonia which starts the cycle so a piece of fish would be fine too.

Re: shrimp?

Yes that will "Feed" the cycle but I want to caution you about this practice....

Many of our "Aquarium Critters" come from parts of the ocean that don't contain the same things that we have locally. By using something "local" you risk introducing something that your tank isn't equipped to handle. Just be careful!

Also I have to admit... you're LUCKY to have that option! I wish I did

Re: shrimp?

NICE!! I like the cubes. The hubby's 24g is probably the nicest out of ours -- a 75, 55, 24 and 5g.

Re: shrimp?

yeah al i live close to the beach and go fishing (offshore) quite often. so i have access to ocean water and obviously critters. i'm sure there's plenty of risks though involved with using wild animals/water etc.

i tell you, my fishing addiction actually feeds my marine aquarium addiction and visa versa. when we stop on a paddy looking for fish under the kelp it's unreal the mount of life when you look closely. anyway, hope to get my mini reef going so that i might have my urban ocean in my condo.

maybe i'll post some pics from a fishing trip??????????? ha maybe wrong place for that

When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.
