Aquapod 12 flter floss upgrade

Having our aquapod up for several weeks now, we were doing several of the mods that this sight recommends. One was the maxi jet 900 pump upgrade, now we are replacing the stock filter sponge with filter floss. As the stock filter is about the size of a brick, how much filter fiber should we use? We did not cover any of the inlet holes. Thanks in advance,
~Dale

Re: Aquapod 12 flter floss upgrade

You have probably already figured out how much filter floss to use. Just make sure you clean or change it out on a regular basis (weekly) or you could develope nitrAte issues later on.

Thanks Golden!
We are using a small amount, 1 piece down between the filtration chambers, and 1 up top for the stock skimmer type filter. Replacing every 2 days. Seems to be doing some good, absorbing a slight brownins tint where the water enters into it.

I'm still a noob! Is there a link for this filter floss upgrade! I always heard that was bad for SaltWater. Just want to try and learn some things.

Thanks!

Re: Aquapod 12 flter floss upgrade

Im not too sure where I found the idea but I think it was on this site. It seems the original sponge filter holds Nitrates pretty badly so removing it from the 1st filter compartment (theres 4 in the aquapod 12) and replacing with easier breathing filter floss lessens the ability to hold the Nitrates. Ive been forewarned that any mechanical means of filtration will hold Nitrates and needs to be a constant force to be dealt with.

Re: Aquapod 12 flter floss upgrade

Right on the money.
The sponges are ok as long as you clean them frequently and well. It is a lot easier to just remove and replace the floss every couple of days and not let it produce the nitrates to begin with.
