with a SW set up there is one basic fundamental rule that we ALL should follow
When in doubt... wait it out. This means take it slow and let the tank "develop" and don't rush it. Time is your friend

Re: cycling tank with DEAD freshwater muscle

If you have LR/LS and a skimmer going (ie; basic setup), then just let it go for a few weeks and test the water every few days... just have patience and once done, add livestock slowly and it'll work out great.

Just don't add anymore weird things into your tank!

Yeah, I'd say you should have an ammonia source...

Do your tank a favor and don't put anything else in it until AFTER you research what it is and what its requirements are...that goes for fish, inverts, corals, everything.

The goal is to do what's best for the animals...

Re: cycling tank with DEAD freshwater muscle

Ah, ok. If you brought them home for the sole purpose of providing an ammonia source, then that's fine. I thought from your original post that you were going to try to keep them in the tank...
