how much LR should i use for a 29g tank

Whats most important about the LR is not the weight but how much surface area there is for bacteria to grow on. The 1.5 lb per gallon is a general rule of theumb. If you can get lighter more porous live rock then you should do it to maintain as large a volume of water as possible.

You can add it in stages but do so before you add livestock to the tank. Adding a substantial amount of LR after the fact will often cause a cycle.
