| Bryozoan | Re: First Reef Tank first disaster Well it's been three weeks since my loss. Just wanted to give an update. Done one 30% water change and 2 10% water changes. Levels are stable. Snails are doing fine so far and the zoo's are growing a little. Cyano seems to be taking over the gravel to some degree. Still plan on doing weekly water changes so I can get the cyano under control. Haven't dosed anything at all per everyones recommendation. Bubble algae is taking over one of my rocks and little white serpent stars are everywhere. Pods are real active too. Doing a water change tonight so I will post my tests in a day or so. Thanks for the help again. |

| Achilles Tang | Re: First Reef Tank first disaster How's your lighting schedule?? I got rid of my cyano by primarily cutting back on the light for a few days. It's probably the easiest of the many ways to battle cyano and sometimes can make a great improvement. Also make sure those areas have good flow. Also - bubble algae - I have some on a rock that I bought with xenia on it - another reason to quarantine everything - I took the entire rock out of my tank and picked the bubbles off... Sounds like things are progressing realy well. There will be other challenges ahead, but you know where to come for advice!!

| Elegance coral | Re: First Reef Tank first disaster sounds like things are turning around for you and im glad to hear that what is your ph i don't know if this was an oversight by some or whatnot but ur ph was below 8.0 which might have effected the frogspawn a bit the biggest thing to remember is the smaller the tank the harder it is when it comes to saltwater because if you accidently does a little too much of something theres no water to really dilute it in a 29 as there would be in say a 100gallon. your alk needs to be up just a bit but with the right ph raising agent that alk will come up with it as well.....and trust me i understand your struggles im not going to even get into what i delt with in my first reef tank which was a 10g with not a whole lot of knowledge and no patience...heck i still don't have patience and at times it gets me nowhere so best thing to do is not really get upset with the hobby keep us posted. also what kind of lights are you using and what is your photoperiod are you using timers? as it may play a role in the algae problems

| Bryozoan | Re: First Reef Tank first disaster The photo period is actinics on at 10 whites on at 12 whites of at 8 and actinics off at 10. You think i should cut that back. The lights are pc's 36 watts each. Standard bio-cube bulbs. I have some halimeda starting to grow that I don't want to upset. Also the zoo's mushrooms and starpolyps are in there still will they mind it too much. I realize they are hardy but I just want to be sure. The ph got up to 8.1 and alk got to 10 last time I tested. The bubble algae rock I plan on taking out and cleaning with my next water change hopefully tonight. I have some grape caulerpa growing too that I might just leave for now but we'll see. I know it can get out of hand real quick too. |

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: First Reef Tank first disaster Welccome to RS! Sounds like things are turning around. My question at this point would be what is feeding the cyano and bubble algae? They both need nutrients to survive. Have you tested yoir water change water for nitrates and phosphates? Your tank may read at 0 but that is because the algae is eating it all. Just something to think about.
