Raw Shrimp Cycling Smell Question

How bad does it get when you cycle your tank with a raw shrimp. Ive read on a few posts that it can smell so I need to know. The tank is going to be in my room and if it does smell I need to go buy some air freshners this weekend along with the other supplies I need.

Thanks in Advance.

Re: Raw Shrimp Cycling Smell Question

I dont know if it really smelled up the room. Depends on how much you are gonna be putting in there... I think most of the smell is when you take it out.

The tank will have some what of an ammonia type smell anyway you cycle it.
be careful with air fresheners and what not. If you can use a fan or just nay kind of air movement in the room would be fine.

Re: Raw Shrimp Cycling Smell Question

It can smell either way. I know that our tank started smelling when we were cycling but it was more or less just a stronger smell of seawater for a day or two. It wasn't anything that was unbearable. If you have a lid on it just keep it covered and it should help keep it down.
Oh yeah, do you have anything in there now? One day later on I thought it was our tank only to find out we left the top off the fishfood...

Re: Raw Shrimp Cycling Smell Question

are people against that for 2 reasons, 1 being so stressful on the fish even tho they are hardy & 2 if you dont want to keep them they're a pain to get out? following what the LFS said when i first got into reefing i threw 3 damsels into the new 55g i had & all 2 of 3 died, i know they're cheap but i cant help but feel its wrong. i wouldnt put anything live into a reef unless is safe.
