Where to get live rock Online in Canada

Hello all, I am new to this site and new to starting a SW Tank. I am going to start with a 10G Nano. I have been doing lots of research and reading on this, and I am in no real rush to start.

I have most of my equipment and suplies except for a few things, Test equipment and Live Rock.

I was wondering if there is a good source to order Live Rock online in Canada. I have looked at some of the sites based out of the States and the shipping cost make it expensive. I would be paying close to the same price locally.

Re: Where to get live rock Online in Canada

I got mine from jeffs exotic fish when I first started because they had a sale and the shipping wasnt bad + it was in CA which helps a lot with shipping for me since I am in CA too. Try to find a place in your state if possible, that may help with cost. Also check craigslist for a reefer near you who is giving up on the hobby or moving. These are the cheaper ways to go I guess....I am a college student so thats my main mode of thinking

But you can also check out our sponsers at the bottom of the forums tab. They should have some good stuff. Or the selling section of the forums here too.

Re: Where to get live rock Online in Canada

Hey Mitch,
I too am in Canada.
Honestly, the best thing is to bite the bullet and get it from your LFS.
Our customs gives a HUGE hassle if they will even let it pass through.
I would call them about it. I was just in the states and wanted to bring some stuff back and coming through Toronto was a no no... not possible.
The positive thing is that you will get to pick out the pieces that you like which to me is well worth the money in itself.
What part of Canada are you in?

Re: Where to get live rock Online in Canada

Hey Newbie, Thanks for the info. I am in Edmonton, I found a local supplier for LR here for about $8.00 a pound. The same if I had ordered it from J&L and had it shipped. I also thought it might be a problem when it goes through Customs.

J&L is my LFS, really good people and service. Sorry for the "plug", but I figured good service and products deserve some endorsement.

Re: Where to get live rock Online in Canada

Mitch,
Check around... we get it for $5.99/pound here in Canada.
It works out to be $5.99/pd for 2 pounds or less for Fiji rock.
There have been some places upwards of 8 and 9 dollars though.
However, if Slakker says that they are good then sometimes it is worth paying more for the service and knowledge!
Good Luck.

Re: Where to get live rock Online in Canada

Where in Canada are you? If in the Vancouver area, there's another place not far from J&L that is more expensive, but they have some nice rocks. The benefit at this other place is that they have them in open tubs curing and you can "cherry pick" the nice pieces. They also let you take them out and put aside while you're browsing for rock. This has an added benefit of "draining" the rocks so you're not paying for water. If you're interested, PM me... they don't do online sales though...

Re: Where to get live rock Online in Canada

Hi there, I am in Ontario.
Right smack dab in the middle.
We have 3 stores that we use for our stuff. One guy is fantastic!!! If you don't need it or your tank isn't ready for it he won't sell it to you.
The other one gives us great deals cause we have bought so much from him.
Then one for supplies.
I tell you though, we sure don't have he availability that you guys do in the states! Our customs kills us!
