| Fire Coral | Protein skimmers As things seem to be taking a turn for the better in my tank I guess I can take a look at some of the other things I can worry about. One of the things I was concerned about from the outset (but thought getting the balance of my tank right first was more important) was the protein skimmer which is included with it. Obviously being a small tank I have a small skimmer which is submerged in the filtration space behind the plastic display area backing. I have raised the skimmer until it touches the lid and turned it's flow to minimum, but still it fills up in about 30 seconds and flows back into the tank water. I see no way of making any further adjustments. The idea of this skimmer seems quite good but in practice it looks as though it is going to be useless. I'd rather hoped the efficiency of the pump would fall off and things would be OK, but after 3 weeks of service the problem persists. Now my idea may well be foolish and demonstrate just how naive I am as a newbie, but I'd rather look a bit silly and have my tank in good health, so here goes. It's pretty much impossible to add an external skimmer to the tank 24/7 and was wondering whether it was possible to use a completely over the top skimmer for a couple of hours every few days. Feel free to speak your mind.

| Manta Ray | Re: Protein skimmers I'm confused a little (what's new right). The skimmer fills with water? or the cup fills with skimmate? You do not want skimmate to flow back into the water. You could use an external skimmer a couple of hours a day but it would be a pain I would think. There's got to be a way to hang the Aqua C Ramora behind the tank with some modification. Is it possible to post a pic of the back of the aquarium?

| Manta Ray | Re: Protein skimmers Thanks Al. THAT is a terribly inconvenient lid on that tank. Is the back plastic and if so, can it be drilled to plumb for a skimmer? There has to be a way to "tame the beast".
