| Manta Ray | Re: Which LR The type of rock depends on the type of aquascape you want. I personally dont like the regular fiji rock it is too plain for me. I really like the Kaelini rock. Lalo rock has cool shapes, as does Huni. For a 29 gallon nano you will need enough rock to create a visually pleasing display. Also take into consideration that the LR will be your main source of Bio-Filtration. So good quality LR is a must. In a nano tank you do not want too much rock, as you already have little water volume. The more LR you add the less water you can hold. Personally I think that around 30# will do the trick. Also here in charlotte there is not a place that has good rock. I get all of mine off the net. Even with shipping I still save money. Here are a few good sources for LR Reefermadness.us pacificeastaquaculture.com Liveaquaria.com ~Michael

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: Which LR You cure LR by putting it in a container of salt water with a powerhead and a heater. A skimmer is a great addition but not strictly necessarry. Run tests on your curing container like you would a tank and do water changes to reduce the nitrates caused by the die-off. Once it has completed it's cycle and the tests stay good then the rock is cured and ready to put in the tank. Even if you buy "cured" LR you still want to re-cure it yourself since you don't know how well or how recently it has been cured. Pre-cured rock may cure faster but I would get the uncured and spend a bit more time for better ultimate diversity.

| Neon dottyback | Re: Which LR You can use other typs of rock in a reef system, but be careful about this. Most of the normal rock sold for aquarium use is not porous, so it can't host much in the way of bacteria. What you want is what is sometimes referred as coral rock. It look a bit like LR that has been left to dry in the sun. Used in a tank, over time, it will host the same sort of bacteria that is on typical live rock. Here is an example of a place that sells such rock - Marco Rocks The finest aquarium rock available, base rock, live rock, reef rock, marco rock, reef tank saltwater fish, live corals, Marco rocks, Fiji live rock, Tonga Live rock . I have never used this company's product, so shop around before you buy. |
