cycle?

bought my api saltwater master test kit and its showing an odd color for ammonia so im going to retest it now my ph is a little low at 7.8 but i have some buffer nitrite is showing 0 and nitrate is at 5 or 10 the color loks the same as both to me ill recheck my ammonia and then add buffer. my tank has been setup for a little more than a week now. Now what?

retested ammonia and it is 0added som buffer and ill check that in a little bit

Wolfgang, if possible return the kit as its not the ideal type of test, look for the salifert kits they are much much better. Meanwhile STOP!!! do NOT! add what your not accurately testing for. Steve

why isnt teh saltwater master test kit the ideal type of test? ive used api for every water test i have ever done. What makes salifert any better? Not being rude jsut would like to be more informed

been using APi since i started in this hobby and tried the salifert for nitrate and see no difference except for the price. IME I like the API better for the ease of use. and heard some stories about bad salifert test kits.

1.20 G pico RR with 2 megaflow kits, aqua c EV180 with mag12, 2x250 DE 12k halides with 2x54 T5 actinic+, 30G phlenum fuge with chaeto, iwaki 55rlt return pump connected to a sea swirl, 4 tunze 6025 inside the main tank for water circulation (2 are modded) 3 Koralias PH(2 #4's and 1 #3)
sps,lps,zoas,softies,pink tip BTA
tangs - yellow, unicorn, blue hippo, palini and RS Purple
Blue Spot Jaw Fish
red lyretail anthias
pair of spotted mandarin goby
wrasse - yellow corris
scribble rabbit fish
Clown Fish -3 percula
high fin shrimp goby
clean up crew - various snails and crabs, red linkia star
And a 30G AGA softies with clown & diamond head goby

17 bucks per kit seems ridiculous! api hasn't failed me yet so thats what im sticking with.

partly personnel preference, never had good results with the api kits, fresh or salt, still, getting your results confirmed at this point would not hurt.

ill take a water sample to my trustworthy lfs and have them test it and compare results

on another note my water stays at a constant 82 degrees F if it dosent fluctuate i should be ok with adding fish that would normaly perfer 78 degrees F water?

i would not recomend adding anything for this young of a tank. the key to this hobby is PATIENT and alot more PATIENT.

I personally use API for just simple tests like ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, & PH. For more advance test, I use Salifert for Calcium & Carbonate tests. There is nothing wrong with using API. Salifert is just more accurate, but that's just me...

im not plannig on doing ant lps or sps so i wont be obsessing about calcium and what not. so far what i have is ammonia nitrate nitrite ph and phosphate test kits what else would i need for keeping soft corals zoas and maybe an anemone later on. its a 24 gallon aquapod with 64 watts of cf over it
