What next?

So far, no loss of life and all seems to be well.
The water parameters are perfect and maintaining.

I was thinking perhaps an encrusting montipora (?) to begin on the right side (mid to high). Mid is about 7" from surface, high about 3.5".

The lighting is 96w 10k and 96w blue actinic.

Comment welcome.

Re: What next?

Ok i am lost on this one. First its a nice picture but its HUGE!!! so are we going 3 inches to our computer screens or 3 inches in your tank... cuz with a pic that big its going to be a difference of feet. not inches. LOL and what is the white flying stuff in the water colum??? it looks like someone dropped a box of frosted flakes in there and they dissolved. It is a tank right and just not a big cereal bowl im looking at. LOL just kidding. It looks good but i have no clue where to look.

Re: What next?

Point well taken......

The white squiglies are tiny air bubbles that blow in from time to time.

Re: What next?

Reefguy, I believe he is asking if he were to add an encrusting montipora to the right side of the tank, would it be better to place it high or mid way up the tank.

From the description of your lighting I'm not sure i would try an SPS under it. If you do decide to try it, place it as high as you can.

Re: What next?

HA HA HA i feel dumb...wow i thought i was losing my mind. Sorry worked late last night and i am here at work early this AM so i can attend our companies Holiday Party tonight. Yeah i second that. I would not go for SPS due to your lighting, you may just get by but it isnt going to thrive. In your case the higher the better.

Re: What next?

I think you both sort of touched on it.... I think I can get away with soft corals at any position on the rock, but with the SPS I have doubts whether it will ever really grow or just stay alive.

Given that, how would buttons or zoos fare given the lighting?

Re: What next?

Zoas and palys(button polyps) would do fine under those lights.

With those lights, you could keep softies and most LPS corals with no problems.

Re: What next?

Thx for that --- I suppose there's a big difference between a retailers viewpoint that the lighting is 'sufficient' for certain SPS, while in reality they'll simply not reach their potential.

A side question --
I bought a small rock (~6") encrusted with red mushrooms (about 5) that were about 1-1.5" in diameter. I have it sitting low in the water, about 12 inches from the surface and the mushrooms open wide to at least 3-4" inches in diameter. Is the expansion a function of depth? or are they just very healthy? Their coloration and texture are picture perfect. At the opposit end I have green-striped mushrooms on a rock way up (3" from surface) that have good coloration and texture but do not expand nearly as much. Is the mushrooms expansion directly related to the distance from the light source?

Re: What next?

Mushrooms will get big like that when the lights are on.

They are photosynthetic - they get their nutrients from the light.
There could be some corralation between shroom expansion and proximity to the lights but it could also just be the fact that they are different shrooms.

Re: What next?

Tank's looking good. I like your rock-work. It is glued right?

Stay away from SPS unless you REALLY upgrade the lights. You'll love Zoas, shrooms and palys in that tank.

You've got some nice looking Xenia in there. Be sure to keep it in check as once it starts taking off it's like grass... it will grow anywhere it wants especially where you DON'T want it to. I personally love Xenia as I have it all over both of my tanks

When in doubt... wait it out. This means take it slow and let the tank "develop" and don't rush it. Time is your friend

Re: What next?

Glued..... (oh my)..... The rocks are stacked, and fit together almost like puzzle pieces (as far as an interlocking feel). The tank started up with 3 rocks in the center, then I added three on the right hand side, creating different elevations. The rocks on the right side are about the size of footballs. After all is settled in, I'll popuate the left side (not visible in pix) with another multilevel rock structure using several smaller pieces (no bigger than a softball), to create a lot of nooks and crannies.

If you refer to the images on Mike's Mini-Reef
, I went wild adding pieces last night.

A couple of LPS and smaller polyps.

Over the next week or so, I can get a sense of how each piece reacts at different light/flow levels and move around accordingly.

The sun coral is insane, though. Too much eye candy for one view.
