conk shell

I have a question, a friend of mine gave me a shell and I want to put it into my tank but it was definetly sealed with something as it was bought at a store, will it leach into my tank or am I safe?

Re: conk shell

Chances are that the shell is safe. To be sure there isn't any dried up animal matter inside you can boil it for a few minutes. That will soften any matter in there and you can shake it out. Another method is to simply set it in a bucket of water outside in the sun. If there is any leftovers your nose will be able to detect it.

Re: conk shell

Jason I would NOT put that into my tank. If I understand correctly you mean something was applied to the shell to seal it as a decoration by the store. That's NOT something you want to put into your tank. IF you can find out exactly what it was sealed with then we can better help you make a decision but if you can't find out do NOT put that into your tank.

Re: conk shell

You are correct AL and there is no way I can find out what it was sealed with.

Re: conk shell

Just keep it out close to the tank to help with the room "ambiance" and NOT in the tank.

Re: conk shell

I agree with Al. It could have polyurethane or shellac to make it shiney. It's coffee table decoration and not meant to be in a tank.
