Question "wave" makers that turn power heads ON/OFF

Has anyone run one of the "wave" makers that turn power heads ON/OFF?

If you've read my chronical you know I've got a number of devices that can turn electrical ports on and off.

My question is - how hard is this ON/OFF stuff on the power heads, are there some that are better at this than others? The one impeller (not propeller) powerhead I have seems to have a hard time re-starting sometimes, and also clanks when it starts...

Appreciate any experiences.

Drew

Maxijet powerheads are the best for wave makers. I currently use two korallias on a wave maker and although they occassionally clicky when starting, they work fine.

When you say "wavemaker" do you mean a dedicated wavemaker or do you mean a controller that functions as a wavemaker? I'm VERY intrigued here about the idea of using myAqua-controller to cycle on and off a pair of koralias.

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Al - when Doni says they 'clink' when turning on - this indicates she's using a controller or "wave" maker to turn the power heads on and off. You dont get a real wave from this, but you can simulate the back and forth movement.. kind of.

Oh yeah I completely understand the whole concept and the "clink" and lack of wave. I was just wonderig if she's using a "WaveMaker" or the progammable part of a tank controller to cycle the pumps on and off.

Re: "wave" makers that turn power heads ON/OFF

Mine are on a controller/timer (aquacontroller iii). They are on a random on/off schedule turning on/off (randomly for 5-30 min). So the cycle is seldom the same creating excellent turbulence.

Re: "wave" makers that turn power heads ON/OFF

ah.. yeah I could see how it could be tought to use a tank controller to cycle very often if most are like the aquacontroller its based off the clock, so you'd have to write a lot of "if time >3:00 turn pm1 off, if time >3:05 turn pm1 on" - messy.

Re: "wave" makers that turn power heads ON/OFF

I agree Drew. But I was under the impression that the Hydor's didn't fair well with simple on/off controll but I could have simply DREAMED that up somewhere!!

LOL!! But since I already have my aqua-controller if the Hydors would work on the wave function that would be "Freaking Sweet Man!".

Hey that's the BEST news I've heard all day! I was hoping you'd come back with something like that Doni.

Re: "wave" makers that turn power heads ON/OFF

The EcoTech vortech pumps have no issues with the cycling on and off. However the cost of two pumps is inhibitive for most. Ecotech has just introduced their new controller that communicate with each other through a wireless conection for up to, I think, 4 vortech pumps. It is awesome!

Scott, I've seen these - I keep telling my self there is no way I'm spending $700 on 2 pumps!
