Sump Question

OK....I have a 55 gal. with no sump. I am about to buy a 110 gal that is pre-drilled for overflows. How do I go about setting up a sump, what all do I need, etc...? I have no idea how to get one set up. Any suggestions out there?

Thanks as always,
Dave

Re: Sump Question

Well pre-drilled is step one. Next you need a tank to use for the sump. The bigger the better.
Then check out our DIY section for various plans and melevsreef.com.
Lots of plans both places and it is an easy diy as long as you plan carefully.

Re: Sump Question

Yeah, your 55 is your sump. Partition off an area for the fuge with plexi, maybe 1/3. the rest is used for baffles, skimmer, filter sock, etc. See above for sites to check.

Re: Sump Question

Agree except for the plexi. Use glass and GE Silicone I to mount the baffles.

Re: Sump Question

Doc is right about that. Glass tank = Glass baffles acrylic tank = acrylic baffles. Some people never have any problems with differing materials but on the other hand some people have had their sump/fuge mysteriously shatter. This comes from the fact that glass and acrylic expand/contract differently and the baffles being in the middle of a sheet of glass can put un-due stress right where it can't be dealt with. Result = Cracked/Broken glass and water water EVERYWHERE!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Re: Sump Question

this is a 45g that is on my 135. it works great! fuge/return/skimmer/inlet. the short baffle is to direct more bubbles to the surface so i dont get too many micro bubbles in the display.

Re: Sump Question

OK....I am missing something that I am sure is pretty obvious. If the electric goes out, what keeps all of the water from draining from the main tank? I am assuming the outlet is close to the top? If that is the case, does that mean the sump is only about half full so it could contain the water that might flow to it in a power outage?

Also, does the size of pump control how fast the water leaves the main tank or is that gravity/siphon (sp?)? I know it would control how fast it is pumped back in the main tank from the sump, but how is the rate of flow from the main tank to the sump controlled....so outgoing water won't run faster then it is pumping back in?

I am sorry for the dumb question, I am just having a hard time getting this one.

Thanks,
Dave
