Smile Ok a couple newbie questions

So as i stated in a post yesterday, I just ordered me up a 40 gallon breeder tank and stand

It was mentioned that PC bulbs are too weak, but I remember having those on our highschool tank. what are some other good ideas for lighting especially that maybe wont cost a fortune?

I also have an empty 29 gallon and an empty 15 gallon sitting at my parents house that I would maybe like to do something with. Any ideas? I keep coming across the word refugeum but I don't know exactly what it is. but maybe this is an option for one of the tanks?

I dont know if i necessarily want to use all three tanks, especially right away, but I think it would be cool to have the main (40 gallon) and a secondary tank -- i tihnk i mentioned that yesterday.

Is there any recommended books I could buy? I bought Reef Aquarium Fishes by Scott W. Michael and The New Marine Aquarium by Michael S. Paletta.

Thanks guys..

(anybody know the difference between a newbie and a noob (or newb)?, a noob or newb is somebody who doesn't know, wants to shortcut, and doesnt want to learn, a newbie is new to something but wants to learn and do it right -- just a random tidbit for ya )

Re: Ok a couple newbie questions

A refugium is a secondary tank, usually smaller than your display tank.
There are various ways of linking them together, but the main purpose is to export excess nutrients out of the water before they decay and over-feed the nitrogen cycle.

This is accomplished by adding various elements to the refuge.
DSB Deep Sand Beed for removing nitrates.
Macro algae like chaetomorph (looks like a ball of green steel wool) This helps eat nitrates and phosphates before nuisance algae, like hair algae, can use it to grow in your main tank.
Alot of people also add cleanup crews of snails and hermits in the refuge.
Also, the refugium can become a refuge for pods to grow and then make a tasty living snack for your main tanks inhabitants.

Hope this helps.

People come into our lives for a reason, a season or a lifetime. When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person. When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Re: Ok a couple newbie questions

Yeah that helps a lot

The thing is I would like to use a sump or a fuge, But is there any way whatsoever that I could do this without drilling a hole in the tank? I would be too upset if i messed up and broke the glass..

I know we did it through using tubes in high school that syphoned, but I would also be worried about that causing the tank to overflow if the syphon lost suction. It's been a few years, I cant remember exactly what we did for failsafe...
